Why is the saying "Up a creek without a paddle" a bad situation?

Just asking since it seems better than down a creek without a paddle. At least up a creek you have the current to carry you downstream. Whereas if downstream and you wanted to get upstream, then that is a bad situation.

Who says you're as far up Sh-t Creek as you wish to go?? Therefore a paddle would be needed to propel your craft (because your Mercury outboard broke down because you tried to save money and did not use the manufacturers oil) away from the banjo playin hillbillies.
