Why is the saying "Up a creek without a paddle" a bad situation?

Just asking since it seems better than down a creek without a paddle. At least up a creek you have the current to carry you downstream. Whereas if downstream and you wanted to get upstream, then that is a bad situation.

Better no paddle than a cheap Chinese knockoff. They copy everything and the quality is (edit).

Because that's where the inbred, banjo playing, hillbillys are at. And you don't have a paddle to defend yourself with.

You have no way controlling what's going to happen next .

If you're up $hits creek without a paddle , anchor down and hope for the best .

Maybe > The expression goes back about 100 years and was probably first “up Salt Creek”, if we are to judge by the popular 1884 political campaign song “Blaine up Salt Creek.” A salt creek is a creek leading throught the salt marsh or mashland to the ocean - it's very easy to get stuck in one and, without a paddle, a boatman would have no way to get out. The excremental version coneys the same idea, but makes the situation even worse. Thanks to “Word And Phrase Origins”, Robert Hendrickson.

Who says you're as far up Sh-t Creek as you wish to go?? Therefore a paddle would be needed to propel your craft (because your Mercury outboard broke down because you tried to save money and did not use the manufacturers oil) away from the banjo playin hillbillies. Whew, I need another adult beverage.
