Going to look at a new and untitled 2008 boat tomorrow with this motor listed in ad "YAMAHA VZ225TLR". Is this the series 2? Good, bad? Any help would be appreciated.
i dont think it will say "series 2" on it but it should have the updated oil pump installed under recall.

Too many fuel related issues with these motors. Some may say different but IMO 4 stroke is a much better option.
That's a "Series 1" I believe. i have a 200 hp VZ200TLR, on a 2007 boat, and it has been a good engine. Like someone said, insure the oil pump recall has been done before you pick it up. I believe they replace the oil pump with a Series 2 pump.

In reading the question, the OP is not asking about a 4 stroke, he is asking about a 2008 boat. The only 4 stroke with similar performance would be the SHO, which is a very nice engine, but would be much more $$ most likely. Any brand engine, 2 or 4 stroke can have problems with fuel, especially with Ethanol laden fuels. I have had mine since 07 with no issues. The Yamaha 4 strokes have all the same filters as an HPDI. Micron, Bowl, VST, HP, screens, injectors. The delivery system is almost identical. Keep the fuel fresh, run the right additives, keep up on maintenance and you will be ok with any brand OB 2 stroke or 4. Make sure the oil pump is current and give it a good lake test. Even though untitled I would want to see the hours printed. Mine is MFG Jan 07 and had all changes made from factory but is not branded S2.
