Yamaha VMAX 150 Advice

I am in the process of finding a solid used motor to repower my boat. I am coming across a number of VMAX 150’s that are in my price range. I have no knowledge of Yamaha 2 stroke outboards and their reliability history.

I have seen VMAX 150’s from 1998 to current that might fit my requirements. Are there any years or particular models that have provided reliability or performance problems? Are the Carb’d models reliable and easy to maintain? Should I save up more for a HPDI?

Again, I am green when it comes to Yamaha 2 strokes, so any information is very helpful.

There is not an engine anywhere that is more reliable than Yamaha's 150 VMAX. I have been with Yamaha since the mid 90's and have sold hundreds of them and have NEVER had a VMAX 150 come back with a major problem. I may have 3 come in tomorrow, but haven't seen one yet. If I were going to buy myself an engine that I wanted to last forever, I would buy a VMAX 150 and never look back. Just my .02
