    VMAX Thrust Washer?

When I had the prop off, I was trying to take the thrust washer off and check behind it.... Normally, on my previous mercs you could just tap the washer and it would free up and slide off... I tapped on this a few times, spun it, tapped again and no luck... Is there a trick to these? 2002 VMAX 250 OX66 - Prop is a 27 T1... Thanks...

Its always been more of a smack than a tap for me (with a hammer). Give the washer a good single hit, it should pop free. If all else fails, use a gear puller, wrapping the arms with wire to hold the claws in place while you crank it up.

Ok, and yes, it's a pretty good clank on it with the hammer... Just having never removed one from a Yamaha, I was not sure if there was something I was missing... It'll come off there next time the prop is off...

Check your prop clearance to the gear housing. that tough to come off is a dead give away for the thrust washer pressing on the prop shaft too far. very quickly the prop will destroy the carrier assembly and other bad things will happen. the yamaha pages are full of this problem!!!!

I second that, mine cracked into two peices and my prop rubs/scratched the lower unit. The thrust spacer ain't cheap either, $100.

There is a new 2 piece thrust washer that should be used with the Yamaha T1 props, check with your dealer and do not use the older thrust washer.

    Wayne,

Checked with Yamaha dealer, they said 2 pc. washer is a proto type part, and not available. Recommended to just keep the prop tight with the original washer. Not sure what is going on- is there a part number for the 2 pc. washer?

If you have a after market prop with a differnt thrust washer, I would run this until the 2 piece thrust washer is available. The oem washer (stainless or brass) is junk and will eat into the geacase and prop if continue to run!! Have your dealer call Yamaha service and request one, if your gearcase if too bad you may be surprised what Yamaha might do

Re: VMAX Thrust Washer? (Wayne Worthy)

Thanks for the info guys.... It's a Yamaha 27 T1 prop... It's not riding on the LU housing or anything, prop spins freely and no problems to date... I was just doing my regular spring maintenance and wanted to check behind the washer... Being my first yamaha, I wanted to see if there was something different that needed to be done...

I think it's just stuck on there good... I'll snap a pic of it and post next time i have the prop off...

Mine is the same way ('04 250 EFI) Mine spins freely it's not rubbing the housing. I have a T-1 and a TRO4 they both use the same thrust washer, so I just leave it on. I remember really having to beat on it to get it off before.

    Re: VMAX Thrust Washer? (295PROXL)

I had the same problem, took a gear pulled and a big hammer to get it off. I put Neverseize on it and it comes right off now.
