    hpdi question ?

when you do the 1st 10 minute idle for the break in procedure , are you supposed to disconect the oil link arm so it gives the max amount of oil like it would at wide open throttle and do the hpdi's double oil during the break in ?

Did mind with it in gear and let the computer do the oiling. The computer will do all the extra oiling during break in. Just follow the book and you will be ok.

    Re: hpdi question ? (MNXD9)

The mechanic at the dealer were I bought my boat said that is the way Yammie recommends the first part of the break-in to be done. He told me they disconnect the arm and give it full oil for about 20 minutes at an idle then the rest of the break-in is on you. He also said the HPDI's do not double oil during the break-in like a lot of people think. It is controlled mechanically through the oil pump linkage arm not the computer. He has been working on Yammies for a long time and seems to really know what he is talking about. I personally don't know everything the computer controls on the HPDI's but I do trust this guy considering he completely rebuilt mine after it blew with 54 hours on it and I haven't had a second of trouble out of it since.

Stop Stop. This makes no sense read the owners Manuel what does it say. Too much oil will ruin your motor. If you have any questions after that call Yamaha. Outboards are user friendly you should not have to go under the cowling and disconnect any thing on a new motor maybe mix oil in tank for break in that's what my OX66 called for. Let us know how you make out. Enrico

Just looked at your owners Manuel on line go to Yamaha outboards then to parts view owners Manuel. Do Not disconnect any thing run at fast idle for first 10 minutes in neutral the rest is common sense read it. Do not add oil to gas tank like my motor.

My dealer does the linkage thing, for extra oiling in the first few minutes of the initial running of the engine too (they do run it in-gear, in a tank). After that...It's oiling at the same rate that it always will.

I wouldn't worry a bit about that Hammer John.....

On my 300HPDI I put the boat in the water started the motor put in gear and idled for 10 minutes and never looked back after that. No linkage to disconnect, no adding oil to the gas tank. motor takes care of it all.

DO NOT EVER ADD OIL TO THE GAS IN A DIRECT INJECTED MOTOR!!!

Sorry, just wanted that pointed out. These are not like the old carb'd/OX66 motors. You can ruin an HPDI in a hurry.

breaking on HPDI with air bleeding oil pump

put rag on oil bleeder screw
    disconnect pump link rod
    start engine
    loosen air bleeder screw
when no air bubbles come out tighten screw
    disconnect oil pump feed hose
    check for oil flow
    reconnect oil pump line
    reconnect oil pump link rod

    idle motor for 10 minutes

this is straight from my factory training notes
