I need an opinion on 2000 Johnson 150 hp Fuel/Oil Pump OMS

After ten years of reliable use the OMS pump on my Johnson 150 has given up the ghost and gave me a nice two hour night troll up Kentcky Lake last night.

My mechanic (who sold me the boat new and has been the only one to service it), has told me I have two choices, new OMS pump to the tune of $475 or rebuild the one I've got ( about $175) and mix my own oil since he doesn't recommend rebuilding the oil pump end.

I'd heard the VRO horror stories but mine even failed like it was supposed to with alarms.

Can anybody give me some advice here? Any pros or cons from experience?

Most VRO horror stories are just that...stories. You got 10 years of good service from the first pump. No reason to think you wouldn't get another 10 with a new one. I would pop for the new one and not ever have to worry about mixing (or forgetting oil).

Oil pump side can't be rebuild only the air motor piston and fuel piston. Both new diaphrams. A fuel only fuel pump will save you only about $35.00 go new OMS.

Mine was over oiling and I disconnected the oil side and mixed for a year until the fuel side went out and then I replaced the unit.

Have your tech check the fuel side of the pump. If the diaphram is split put in the kit . If nothing jumps out as a problem replace the unit.

After I replaced the unit I measured the oil usage and it is amazing how accurate the oil pump is and after seeing how it works the oil side is bulletproof.

Thanks for the responses. I told my motor guy just to order me a new fuel/gas unit. I guess I've too lazy to add oil to the tank.

So you're getting a fuel only pump? If so you need to add oil to the fuel tank.

I've always been curious to know - do the other motor builders get as much flak about the oiling unit as BRP? It sure seems that there is a lot of misinformation out there about the OMS, and I was wondering if Merc and Yammie get the same treatment.

Here is what I do. I have two quarts of oil in boat, oil side out add oil to tank, I have 5 feet of fuel line in boat, fuel side out, add fuel line extension to line, to bring primer bulb to driver, pump bulb and idle in. This works on older carb motors.

no, I meant to say I told him just to get a new OMS Fuel/Oil unit. I hate to spend that $475 on a ten year old boat, but I bought it new and have taken pretty good care of it.

    FYI
The pump was removed and examined and found the oil pump side to have locked up the whole assembly, the pin and nylon washer having been shoved up against the cover and stuck there. The tech said this was only the second one he'd seen like this in 15 years.

Everyplace we called had the pump on back order for at least two weeks. Next week is my last week of vac and I planned on fishing Kentucky Lake all week. So I disconnected the oil lines and tank and had the fuel side rebuilt. it's worth $150 to get to fish next week. So far it runs fine. I'll order a new unit and install it over the winter or maybe just hold on to it until this rebuilt pump needs replacement.
