I am considering purchasing a 2002 Stratos 21 XL Prostar with a 2002 Evinrude FICHT Ram injected 225 strapped to the back. I've heard a lot of good, and a lot of bad when it comes to the FICHTS. I have ran a few in the early 2000 range on non-bass boats. I have seen a few blow. I have seen a few run like they were the hottest motor on the market. The motor has been put on the computer at a marina and shows 257 hours on it, and the mechanic said that all the motor parts appear to be original and has the latest programming updates installed from Evinrude. The motor just had the lower unit replaced. The marina stated that the lower unit seal blew due to fishing line getting wound and bound up on the shaft, causing damage to the gears and shaft, so they replaced the lower unit.
My questions would be, is this a reliable motor? I know it's a gamble buying any used motor, but I'm trying to limit my wager. I know that most manufactors had problems with their late 90's and early 2000's motors trying to dial in their EFI/DFI technology. Second, what types of things should I look for as far as maintenance history or problem areas?
I don't have the motor serial number at hand right this second but I'll have it here within the next few days.
While we are on the topic of motors, it is on the lot with just a 3 blade aluminum prop and I would definately change to a stainless one. Any suggestions for matching up a prop with this boat and motor? (ie pitch, brand, 3/4 balde)
Any help in regards to this motor would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
