    Question about 150 Johnson Venom

    Tonight i was running back to the launch and i got just about to the bouy and my boat just powered down by itself. and now it will not start when i turn the key all there is a thunk like it trying to turn over. there were no alarms or anything. any help is appreciated.

    Never heard of a 150 Venom. Perhaps a model number would be a good place to start. See Rule #1. But I would perform a compression test first.

    I would still perform a compression test, You have a 2001 model 150.

    i found the problem. im pretty sure a piston ring went i took out the spark plugs and there was metal in one of the spark plugs.

    if a ring goes bad do you know about what you would have to replace. do you usually have to boar out the block if the rings go bad? or can you get a sleeve replaced? do the pistons usually go bad?

    Motor gets torn down. Depending on damage to the cylinder it may be able to be honed. You can bore up to .030 over size. This will require and oversize piston and ring set (comes together). While the motor is apart it would be a good time to pull the pistons clean the ring lands on all of them, hone the cylinders and install new rings on the cleaned up pistons. A factory service manual is a must once you start doing work on internal parts.
    If the damage to the cylinder cannot be cleaned up by boring to .030 then a sleeve can be installed and a standard size piston/rings can be installed.

    A shop manual would be a good place to start. It will spell out everything needed as far as tools and torque specs. A good machine shop locally is a must also.
