03 Evinrude ficht ram inj. 200hp question

Hi guys, i an thinking of buying an 03 Ranger bass boat with above motor. Always had Merc power on my other Rangers. Just wondering if there are any known problems with this year run engines. And what i should look for or ask question about this motor before buying. It looks in real nice cond. skeg is clean and prop is good. Any help and info on this engine would be great. My fishing partner had a 99 Evinrude. and has real trouble with it the last couple of years and went to a Yamaha this year. he said this is a different company that started making these engines and fixed the problems he was having. He was having problems with his fuel inj. and had to have the motor rebuilt 2 times and 2 weeks ago he has trouble again. So i am a little worried about buying this 7 year old motor. So any input would be great THANKS!!

The '03 is a strong performer. It is a BRP motor (Evinrude) post OMC chapter 11 motor. Money well spent would be for you to have a certified DFI tech pull an engine report and do a compression test for you. Check the LU fluid's color, just crack the drain plug and see if it is milky. It may be blue/green or honey colored depending on what was put in. Tighten the drain plug back up and remove the vent plug and give it a wif. If it smells burnt someone put in fresh fluid to cover up a possible LU issue. If not you should be ready to rock. If you decide to purchase it run XD-100 oil in it. Change your plugs every 100 hours less if you idle a lot and index them properly.
