    Evinrude bogging down.

Maybe someone here can help me trouble shoot my problem.

My motor is a 1989 Evinrude VRO.
    Here's my problem.

When starting the motor I have to hit the choke button about 10 times while it's running to keep it going on "fast Idle". Once it gets going, it runs fine, but seems to idle a little low. Is this just the idle adjustment or more?

Also once in the water, if I put my boat into reverse it dies out after about 5 seconds at low throttle. If I give it more gas in reverse it won't die out till I switch back to nuetral.

One more thing. When I shut the motor off and re-start it, it usually requires me to "fast idle" it. It doesn't seem to matter if it was off for a minute or an hour. And when I start to take off, sometimes I have to hit the choke a couple of times to keep it going, otherwise it will bogg down and die out.

Could all this be as simple as needing to adjust the idle on the motor, or adjust the carbs.

    HRE'S SOME ADDITIONAL INFO:
#1 I ran SeaFoam through the cartbs, and put some in a couple tanks.
#2 Motor runs perfect otherwise, no missing, surging etc.
#3 Plugs are all in good shape. (No water in the tank)
#4 Motor has 120 lb's compression in all three cylinders.

So can anyone help me out with this one? It's a pain in the butt to always Fast Idle the motor and choke it when re starting and re starting it after it dies out.

    Re: Evinrude bogging down. (CatManLee)

No Problems, after I post this you may have had it with me, that motor still can have 2 different carbs, the Early production has no adjustment screw for low speed, the Late production has the Screw.

If you have the screw, turn it about 12/64 of a turn out (counterclockwise)....I know...what the hell is 12/64...that's what OMC printed in the manual, just move it a little and see how it runs, remember how many turns you make, you may have to set it back to where it was.

    Re: Evinrude bogging down. (Bassmeister)

Where would the adjustment screw be located? It appears there is a location on the upper part the carbs, but there is no screw there? I suppose my carbs don't have this screw then? So now what, should I just say screw it, and take the carbs off and go through everything from the bottom up?

Last question, if I do take the carbs off and clean them, what should I watch out for when putting everything back together? Such as where should the float levels be, etc?

Thanks for the info, I guess I'll take everything apart, rebuild them and see what happens after that.

I also wanted to mention that this site is awsome, I don't know of many sites that offer all the help and information located here.

    Re: Evinrude bogging down. (Bassmeister)

Rockinest? I had my dad adjust the timing and..........BINGO! Now my motor runs absolutely PERFECT. I only wanted to take the carbs off as a last resort, so he tried the timing and that was it. It picked up the idling a little and now it doesn't stall, backfire or bogg down. Thanks for all the help.
