What are the problems with putting a higher HP motor on?

I have a 187 Elite, and have a sweet deal on a 200HP Merc. Boat is rated for 175HP. The weight of motor is the same and for a few years, the 188 Elites were rated for a 200HP. Is there anyway to get boat certified for a 200HP? What other issues would I have?

The 188s were rated for higher HP due to expanded beam width, plus the 1" in length over the 187. Makes a difference in hp ratings...

Might want to check with your insurance company. Sometimes, there is a bad result if you get into a "situation". Additionally, if you fish tourneys, some require you not exceed recommended hp...

Liability problems with your insurance company. As already stated if you need more power send it to HydroTech in MO and let them put a kit on it. You won't be disappointed and it's cheaper than re-powering.

There are plenty of insurance companies that will insure over powered rigs. Progressive will and many more will also. They want to know how fast it is, and if it'll be used in saltwater, that dictates their rates.

The only negative I can think of is getting into tournaments, then you're in a bind, other than that it's a great matchup.

Or be sneaky and get your mitts on a Yamaha ProV and put a Hydrotec stage kit in it.
