Johnson 130 water pump / impeller

    J130PLSSS (2000 model year Johnson 130hp)

How often should I change out the impeller and/or the entire water pump assembly? I've heard that Merc guys should change out the impeller every year, but OMC guys are good for 2 years. I was also told that you change out the impeller, but simply keep an eye on the housing for marks and grooves. In other words, change out the rest of the housing only when necessary.

Is this a doable job for a relative novice? I realize the lower unit is a bit heavy, and I can get a hand with that part of it. I'm wondering how tough it is to line up the driveshaft, shift shaft, and water tube when re-assembling the LU to the midsection. I haven't done alot of work on the inside of my motor, but I'm very interested and enjoy learning. I want to be able to do some basic maintenance on my motor.

    Thanks alot.

Re: Johnson 130 water pump / impeller (RUSTY63)

That's a great step-by-step. Thanks alot. I have a couple more questions if you don't mind. Could you double-check my first paragraph and give me your opinion about frequency of impeller and housing?

Also, regarding step 19, it is essential to use "BRP Moly lube", or can I simply use general purpose waterproof marine grease like I use on the various zirc fittings and in the trailer wheel hubs? Probably a dumb question, but I don't have any Moly right now.

"19. Apply a small amount of BRP Moly lube to the drive shaft splines and slide gear case back into the midsection."

    Thanks again.

Once every 3 years or 300 hours which ever comes first, dependent on operating conditions.

Nope use the moly lube it comes with the H20 pump kit.

I was wondering the same thing. Does the waterpump kit come with all of the lubes needed?

It comes with a pack of moly lube. I use Triple guard grease when puting the impeller in the housing.

Hey guys, I'm about to get around to changing out the impeller. Looking more closely at the great step-by-step guide you guys have on here, I'm curious about steps 17 and 18. Step 17 says to move the boat shift handle into forward gear, but step 18 says to then push down on the gear case shift rod to shift the gear case into reverse. Is something mixed up here, or do I just not understand how it works?

I also have a stupid question about the masking tape in step 16. When do you remove it?

Sorry, I'm a rookie. Just trying to cover all my bases before taking everything apart.

    Thanks,
    Phillip

By shifting the shift handle into forward you move the linkage away from the shift rod allowing the gear case to slide on.

As you tighten the gear case just before the two surfaces touch you can remove the tape and if you don't no worries, once you start the motor the tape will no longer be in the exhaust housing.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Johnson 130 water pump / impeller (RUSTY63)

Thanks Rusty. Gotcha on the forward/reverse. I'm changing out the impeller tonight, but I took a good look at things last night and went ahead and removed the shifter pin/bolt. It's easier to understand what you are saying now that I've seen the linkage and how it works.

I think I'm with you on the tape. I guess you just remove both sides and then slip the tape out.

Re: Johnson 130 water pump / impeller (Sprint280)

Hey guys, thanks for the help. Myself and a more experienced friend got the impeller changed out last night. A couple of questions arose out of the process. I had gone ahead and ordered the full water pump repair kit since it really wasn't much more expensive than the impeller itself. I was going to go ahead and replace the housing and everything just for the heck of it (it's been 2 years on the impeller and several years on the housing, etc). However, the (poor) instructions included in the kit require that you use "Adhesive M Sealant" in a couple of areas. One is to secure a rubber "flange" to the top of the housing where the housing mates with the mid-section (the tube surrounding the driveshaft). The other is to secure the largest o-ring to the bottom of the housing. On the old housing, I could tell that both of these had been glued. On the big o-ring especially, I could tell that it would be difficult without glue because the o-ring kept falling off (I tried grease, but that only held briefly).

I'm primarily curious if anyone has any comments and if you knew where I could get some "Adhesive M Sealant". This time, I just went ahead and used the old housing. I did use the new metal cup that the impeller resides in.

    Thanks again.
