    Another Hypdrolic sterring question??????

I have a 91 Sabre with a 2005 XR6 150hp Merc. I want to install hydrolic stearing. I fish about 3 or 4 times a month and basically just looking to be able to turn the wheel without a full body work out (my 2nd set manual cables are nearly seized up again) Can someone suggest a good option for me to purchase...Im clueless? Just searching the net there seems to be many out there, but I want what other basscat owners have and have had success with, as well as what Basscat recommends. Thinking of tackling this myself, so any other words of wisdom are also welcomed. Thank you.

You need the SeaStar Pro series from Teleflex. Now with that said all you have to deturmine is wheather you want tilt wheel. The tilt does add to the price of the system, but is very nice.

Bass Cat will recommend cable steering on a rig that old. If the engine is set properly height wise you should lose a lot of that hard steering. Give them a call. They likely have the new and improved cable steering that will work with your rig. In addition, you're likely to save hundreds of dollars.

BCB does usually suggest cables and lubricate them very well with fluid oil of some type prior to install rather than grease. Then occasional grease is fine. It is a more dependable system to us and most cost effective on a 1991 rig.

BCB...thanks! My 91 is in much better than average shape for a boat of it's age and for the amount I use it. It is my fishing boat, but I don't abuse it. I have always thought the stearing was too stiff both before and after the new cables , even after the cables were replaced 4 years ago. Im reluctant to spend $1K on stearing, but I plan to have the boat for years to come...so Im still leaning in that direction after my luck with cables. However, with your recommmendation on cables....how long should I expect them to last, and could a complete disasembly, cleaning, and re-lubing possibly solve my issue? I saw a refence to motor height being a possible cause, but I feel Im ok there as it was set up by Sanderson Marine and I have confidence in those guys, as well as the sterring has got progressively worse over time and the motor positioning has not changed.

I have seen this boat and it may be worth it for the shape his boat is in. It looks like he takes it out once a year or less. CLEAN is an understatement. I didn't know that his boat was a 91 until after I saw it. Couldn't believe it. Not as fast as mine but looks damn good compared to mine ...Now with all that bragging I just gave you, throw some grease/oil in there and see what it does. Then you may need to adjust your torque tab or just remove it like I did mine.

It isn't a question of how hard, though is it worth the cost.

Pitstop Marine has seastar for $829.00 I think I'm putting it on my 91 Champ instead of $400+ for Cables

The thing some are pointing out politely is that if you go hydraulic steering rather than cables on rigs this old, you will put in $1k or more and you will not recover that cost when you choose to sell the boat. The future buyer will be looking at a 90,91 or even my boat a 96 and base his price on that, regardless.
If you're going to hang on to the rig for 4 yrs or more, then probably worth it in the long run.
I went cable replacement this past spring on my Eyra. The local dealership r/r with new cables. The cables that were replaced were the original ones. One was broke in two pieces, the other was frozen up.
I also asked the dealership about lubricating them with an oil as mentioned by BC. The local dealership did say they don't do it and don't recommend it. That is something that BC may want to revisit with them, as I was a little confused over the dealer response.
