    Any doctors aboard?

Went for physical last week...Dr. called today said he wanted me back one day this week. Apparently my blood platelets are low and he was somewhat unnerving me about it. He wouldn't say anything but after I hung up and thought about it it has me worried. Is 139 low enough to be frantic?
I was actually happy about my cholesterol coming down then he threw this at me

you are required to have 250k in platelets in order to donate.
my granddads platelet count was 4k when he went in the hospital with leukemia. I donated to him and mine were somewhere near 400k. A healthy individuals platelet count is usually between 150k to 450k. He almost bleed out internally cause his blood was so thin.
so if yours are 139k, its not too terrible, but something is probably wrong. you need to get it checked out and validate that its not something major.
to make you feel better, my brother in laws are always around 130k and they have checked him for issues for a while and he is good, just has a low platelet count.
Im me if you want to know more. i learned a lot about platelets when he had leukemia.

Normal is 150,000 to 400,000 uL of Blood. This count can vary from lab to lab doing the testingprocedure.

That is the scary part I have a physical every year never had a problem with low platelets, I gave blood last year. So the way I am looking at it online is not good either way from what causes low platelets. I am hoping lipitor has it thrown out of wack or something simple.

Yes, taking Lipitor could be a factor.

More than likely it is a faulty test, which will clear itself, when you are retested.

If your hemoglobin and white blood cell count were normal there is little worry. You could live another 50 years and a platelet count of 139000 would never bother you. It is not a bad idea to recheck to be sure it is not falling. You would rarely see bleeding until the platelets are down to 25000 as a general rule. google thrombocytopenia to get a better idea. And trust in the Lord as He knows how many hairs are on your head and how many platelets are in each cubic milliliter of your blood. He is a blood expert and gave His for you.

Differential diagnosis of thrombocytopenia (low platelets) is very wide, but basically you are either not making enough or you are destroying them too fast. Your doctor will get to the bottom of it. Platelet counts above 100 are acceptable for non emergent surgery (my neck of the woods), so you won't likely start bleeding from your eyeballs and gums with a count like yours, but I wouldn't fire up the chain saw without somebody to keep an eye on you.

Hang in there and keep us updated. Best of luck.

I wouldn't worry about it yet. Get the work up done and go from there. Could be a lot of different factors.
