    Shavings in lower unit oil

Normally I do not drain the lower unit oil I have the shop do it. Today it was very cold so I at least wanted to drain the lower unit oil. When I did I found there to be shavings on both of the screws and what look to be a hint of shavings in the oil. I have run only the XD-50. Is there anything that I should do before I put oil back in to it? What type of lower unit oil is recomended for the Ficht.

    Ed,
The XD-50 is for your Oil Tank and has noting to do with the LU. Small shavings are normal Chunks are different. Have them fill it with Ultra HPF and you'll be a happy boy! CM

    Crankin,

I've always been on the opinion that it's better to refill the lower unit after it's been drained. That way you know you've got oil in there coating everything. Basiclly, you don't have to worry about moister developing in the lower unit and causing the start of any rust.

Now my buddy use to drain his lower unit for winter storage and didn't refill till spring. He never had any problems with that either.

So maybe it doesn't matter unless....

i just did mine with the ultra hpf and i think since you drained it i would go ahead and fill it back up
i know i have a bit of a bad memory and my luck i would forget to do it and go to the lake with no oil in it

    Ditto!

Also, IMHO and I am sure that my two guardian (both named John) angels will back me up on this one. It is best to drain or check for water in the lower unit at the end of the boating season.
When using the ultra hpf "stuff" you don't have to change every season but, "YOU" should check at the end of the season for water, drain and repair if you find water, if no water drain and refill to BRP's specs so the unit don't sit over the winter contaminated with water and rust the bearing and gears.

If you can't run with the big dogs, just stay on the porch.

Do Not leave the gear case empty, refill with (as posted) Ultra HPF XR, the new bottles are out with the XR logo on them.
