    sneeze's at idle

I have a 96 225 efi 3.0 . It has a sneeze at idle but only after it has warmed up, when I take it off the trailer it dos'nt do it but after I drive it from my last fishing spot , let's say 7 or 8 miles at 5000 rpm, when I'm idling around waiting on my trailer to be backed down it spit's or sneezes. What could cause this ? Otherwise it runs fine pushes the ZX300 Skeeter 65mph at 5500 rpm. Also when loading on the trailer it dos'nt seem like it has any power to push the boat that last few inches to hit the bow stop on the trailer. Maybe it's the trailer thats scare's the motor (lol) Thanks for your input. Love this board.

    Re: sneeze's at idle (showboat1)

Two areas you should check to identify the cause of your "lean sneeze":

    1. Confirm that you are pumping the primer bulb FIRM before each and every engine start. Inspect fuel line, primer bulb and fuel filter- replace any components not "up to current standards". Not a bad idea to purchase a diaphram and gasket kit for the "pulse" fuel pump (about $21), and know for sure that it's up to specs.

    2. Confirm proper Engine Sync-n-Link (ESPECIALLY the TPS settings) as per the Service Manual. Your TPS voltage may actually be too low, resulting in a "lean sneeze" (or it's also possibly that a temp sensor is not properly reporting engine temp).

NOTE: This is an item you want to address IMMEDIATELY. "Lean-Sneezing" is a common cause of REED FAILURE (and reed failure is also a common cause of POWERHEAD FAILURE).

Thanks Euro thats something I will check out . If the voltage is to low what would cause this ? The sensor or the source of the voltage? Thanks again your my new hero.

Although a faulty sensor CAN cause this.... most often, I find that the sensor is NOT PROPERLY ADJUSTED. "Adjustment" affects signal voltage that is sent to the ECM.

What's the difference, if any, between a "lean sneeze" and the symptom that was discussed in this thread: http://www.bbcboards.net...eanam

Good question.... and one that there's just not enough information to answer!

This person referred to his problem as a "skip at idle" (usually defined as a studder, or momentary interruption in the normal engine sound or power- often intermittent in nature).

A lean "sneeze" is usually a coughing/spitback that occurs through the intake, much resembling the sound of someone "plugging their nose and sneezing".
