    Lower Unit Removal/Installation Question

So this weekend, I am going to try to remove my lower unit. This past fall, while winterizing I noticed the lower unit oil came out looking like chocolate milk. My understanding that this is an indication of water getting into the lower unit. I have pulled the prop and did not find any fishing line, so I think the prop seals are good. So I thought I would drop the lower unit and take it to an evinrude mechanic to have them do a leak test. (I understand it is cheaper if I just take the lower unit in vs having them drop it.) I am fairly confident I can do this. However I have a couple of questions that hopefully someone can explain. While looking at the johnrude tips, I am confused about step 17 & 18. Step 17 says to move the boat handle to foward gear while 18 says to shift the gear case into reverse gear? Can someone explain why? To me it would seem as though the boat handle shifter and gearcase should be in reverse. Otherwise, how would the shifter bolt align? Does this mean once I slide the gearcase back on and bolt it back on, I move the boat shifter to reverse and then install the shifter bolt?

Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated! The engine I am working on is a 2001 Evinrude 225 Ficht.

Just leave it in reverse you will be fine. Remove the port side belly pan makes your life a lot easier.

Re: Lower Unit Removal/Installation Question (ChampioNman)

Just wanted to say thanks for the response and for all the other help that has been given to numerous people regarding the removal of the lower unit over the last few years. It was my first time ever doing something like this and it was a lot easier than I expected! Unfortunately, the leak test showed that multiple gaskets were leaking. Not wanting to try to replace the seals myself, I let the dealer do it. It cost more than I wanted, but at least all seals/gaskets are new, the gears look great and hopefully all will be good for many years to come. I put the lower back on this weekend and will test once the weather get warmer.

Again, thank you for the help and having such a wonderful place to get information.
