Here is Sherm's how to change a water pump on it, the instructions are the same for getting the lower unit off. Click on the link below.

Fairly simple just changed my impeller last week.
remove black cap directly above trim tab or plate
there is an allen head bolt under that plate remove it
then all that should be left is the four main nuts

Remove lower unit AND WATER PUMP per Sherm's Instructions (noted above).
Turn gearcase "upside down" to allow you to "shake" the hardware out of the water inlet passages. Be sure to get ALL pieces!
Reassemble per Sherm's instructions.
Suggestion: Unless you've replaced the water pump in the last couple of days, I would stongly urge you to go ahead and replace the impeller and gaskets "while it's apart".
