    Lake Erie in January

Went out today on Lake Erie and me and my partner caught about 15 largemouth. Only about 3 or 4 were keepers. One was about 2 1/1 lbs. Can you believe Erie in January? It was great to get out and get my first fishes of the season. Only out for about 3 hours. 54 degrees (land) today. Erie was smooth as silk.

Jamie, we got them in a place called the hot pond. Actually it's in Michigan, just over the state line near Monroe, MI. Detroit Edison (electrical) discharges the water used to cool the turbines into a channel that flows into Lake Erie, and the water temp is like 57 degrees. Of course, you have to run about 3 or 4 miles to get there and usually we some form of ice on the lake at this time. But it was a blast. Hope to get out again soon, weather permitting. Most of the water temps where we launched were like 36 or 37 degrees.

Re: Lake Erie in January (mtst4)

Must have been the warm weather! I had to turn down a trip with a buddy of mine who went to the hot pond Saturday 01-28-06. They caught a nice bag of gills and crappie. I was suppose to join them today, but the weather didn't cooperate. It's making me want to pull my own boat back out, but I don't feel like winterizing it again. Old man winter is bound to show his ugly face again. The Javelin that was mentioned, may have been one of my good buddies I fish with. We fished the Hot pond back in the middle of November, and crushed them.
It was my first time in there, and not what I was expecting at all. It's a lot more like river fishing then pond fishing. You guys did a nice job catching some bass. Not everyone can say they've caught an open water January bass in these parts.

P.S. I agree about the platforms. Tons of fishing line and snags along that shore. It wasn't any good at all when we fished it. However, my buddy says dragging cranks through there can produce some good fish during the early Fall and Spring.

Good reports, nice to see some bass action going on.
