    Mystery Beep

I recently bought a used Ranger from a buddy that has a 2004 Johnson 200 HO. It runs great and has no obvious problems. However, when running in rough water (1-2ft waves) at higher speeds and rpms (50+mph, 5k rpm) I hear a very clear beep like the one when you first start the engine. It doesn't last long and it is not frequent and only happens in the rough water. I see a good pee-stream and I have it all oiled up.

I don't know if it's electrical, mechanical, neither or both. Is this something to worry about and if I get it checked is there anything else I should mention?

    Thanks in advance for advice.

    Re: Mystery Beep (bgreig2)

What you probably have is a loose connection at the key switch that momentarily causes the voltage to drop and then when it comes back causes the system check gage to restart. I experienced the problem a few months ago and found the push on connector to the switch , I believe it was the purple wire, was broken inside the insulation. I had to move the wires around with the key on to isolate it. If you do not find it now it will quit when you need it the most. Hope this helps.

Wow, great answer. It's probably related to another minor problem of the key not always turning off the engine that goes away by jiggling the key. Think they're related?

    Thanks again.

Yes! I suppose they could be related and if they are then a new switch is in order. You could try jiggling the switch with it on to see if the System Check starts over.
