    question for rookie

Allright guys I know you are all busy and folks call me for advice as well so I guess I know how you feel so here goes-

    2004 serial 05044411
    mod e200fhlsrc

My 200 HO has been putting out more smoke? lately...just enough that I now have to wipe off the white transom areas when I get off the water from what I assume is smoke. Use XD50 ONLY. Have had boat for 3 years and this winter is the first time I've ever done that. Printout this fall looked fine on computer and plugs changed a month ago with lowerunit lube. Plugs looked fine. Boat runs good, just mayber a hint slower but still runs 72 easily with unworked prop.

Nothing burger? Carbon guard needed? Never been decarb'd- dealer says I dont need it as I run it year around and am religious about xd 50.

If you are running XD50 then you need to decarb annually. The problem with the black sludge getting on your transom could be due to the engine not coming up to temperature. If I am not mistaken the motor gets additional oil added to the ration when it is coming up to temperature. When you changed the plugs were they the nice brown color or black? If they were black that would be an indication that the operating temperature was not being reached. So in short decarb the motor and have the temperature of the heads checked.

Thanks Dan. The plugs were done by the guys that do the majority of the BRP block rebuilds in the US. Very experienced folks- 10 mechanics, 3,000 powerheads(literally) in a 3 story shop here in central Arkansas. That said, they did think that decarbing was often needed for DI's due to their lean running nature which surprised me but I figured they knew best. Will get that done and see what happens.

How do you check the head temeratures? Run the motor for awhile on the computer and check the temp?

    Thanks for the help!

You can check the temperature with the computer after it has wormed up. If you have access to a infrared temperature sensor that would be best.

Taking it in AM to be hooked up to computer.

Maybe it's nothing but I dont like the idea that there's more smoke/smudge when there hasnt been for 3 years. Motors have got to be like people- they'll give you some subtle symptoms before everything goes to heck.

Do you idle a lot?? I fished an idle only lake, and learned real quick if ya gunna idle ya gunna smoke. I especially noticed it when loading on the trailer. If ya idle above normal idle, and around 1500 rpms (I think) it will double oil causing smoking situation, same as the rpms ya usually use loading on trailer the injector will hammer momentarily during that heavy load period, which will also cause 'em to smoke more. You are right, It shouldn't smoke. JMHO

Have been idling more looking at structure with graph- but have done that in the past as well in some skinny water.

Riverside here in LR opens at 5am so I took it early enough to get back home and take kids to school and come to work. The guys out there wonder if I got the "statoritis" - we will see

    Thanks to all once again.
