    1984 Starfire Fuel Gauge Problem

Have a problem with the fuel gauge. When I switch to "ON", the fuel gauge needle deflects below the "E" instead of going up.

Could it be a problem with the sending unit? If so, where is the sending unit located on the boat and how do I get there?

    I don't think it's the gauge itself...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if yours is the same or not, but my sending unit is located on the top of the tank behind the drivers seat. Mine has a 9"x9" tray that lifts out of the storage compartment. Good Luck with figure'n it out.

    couple thoughts.
1- are you sure the wires are not reversed ?
    2- check for shortage
3-sending unit is in top of tank

I didn't make any changes to affect the wires and the gauge was working before. I check the wiring as per what was suggested.

Although the sending unit is above the tank, what's the best way of getting to it? It seems like the only way in is the rear compartments, which are pretty far back.

    Great suggestions from you folks!

should be in the top of the fuel tank , it is round with two wires hooked to it , on my old skeeter i just opened the compartment took the screws out and pullled the unit and replaced , i think that it is two or three screws in it if i remember right and you get a universal one like it and make the rod to the float the same length to make sure you are right on the gauge http://www.wholesalemarine.com...Ry9aA

I have a 95 Stratos 285xl with the same problem. One tank reads as it should and when the switch is toggled to read the other tank the gauge deflects below the "E". Did you figure out what was causing the problem?

check your ground on the sending unit and make sure it grounds
check connections at switch for corrrosion and at sending unit
it will have to be one of three things , switch , sending unit , or gauge and my guess would be sendng unit.
just a thought but i would think that you could take the sending unit out of tank and hook an ohm meter to the positive and negative terminals ,move float up and down and if it is working then the resistance value should change and if it does not I would say replace sending unit they are not that expensive .just my 2 cents
