Fuel Gauge Problem

The fuel gauge stopped working on my 1999 202 Coral Viper. It stopped working after I had filled it completely in preparation for a fishing trip to Lake of the Woods. (Any correlation) On the first trip out, the needle would bounce rapidly between full and empty, and then it stayed far below empty. I have checked connections at the tank and at the dash, all are tight. Is there a float inside that has stuck or has the gauge failed. Does anyone have any ideas or something I can check?

One of the guys said his fuel gage hadn't worked for years. But when he added Seafoam to his fuel, the gage started working again. He thought it might have been because the float was stuck and the Seafoam freed it up.
