    External fuel/water separator

Rigging a new 07 225 ProXs on an 02 Triton Tr21. The dealer is going to be replacing the fuel lines with new ethanol approved lines. Common sense tells me it would be a good idea to rig an external water/fuel separator. There is plenty of space in the back compartment to mount one. On the other hand, I read somewhere that Mercury doesn't reccomend using an external filter. It said the oem filter on the engine was the only filter needed. It said external filters only cause a fuel restriction. My son designs and run high performance fuel systems for many high performance diesel pickups(as well as stock) and have always run a water fuel separator along side a fuel filter as well. Some of these competition trucks burn gallons of fuel in a matter of 30 seconds at wot. This is a lot of fuel going through these filters and never have a restriction problem. My thought...as long as the filters are changed when they are suppose to be, there won't be a restriction. It seems the extra filtering would be welcomed to help combat water in fuel. So...what is your thoughts on the external fuel/water separator with this ProXs? Just want to make sure this is getting rigged with longevity in mind.

Re: External fuel/water separator (hotfoot pop)

From what i have heard from Don on this site who is a master merc. guy do not add another filter setup on that motor. It already has a 10 micron filter on it which will catch anything that go's through that fuel line. If you add another filtering sys. inline your motor will starve for fuel and lean out which you do not want to happen on the motor.

Adding additional filters to the system CAN INDEED introduce a fuel supply restriction.

Mercury does NOT recommend doing so. Your engine is already equipped with an adequate level of filtration (including a water separating filter in the IVST).

Good to know. Thanks. Also, should all lines be replaced? I assume there is a filler tube and vent tube. A feed line and a return line. Should the feed line and the return line be replaced, or just the feed line?

The lines under the engine cowling are seldom suspect.

Fuel FILL and VENT hoses are most commonly OK.

Here's what you need to know on the fuel lines:
