Hey guys, what can you tell me about this lower unit?

I'm considering buying this boat, but I noticed that the lower unit appears to be different than what a stock lower unit might look like for this motor. Would this be an aftermarket lower unit? The motor is a 1996 Johnson Venom 200. I don't have serial numbers, as the boat is a couple hundred miles away and I haven't been able to look at it in person yet. The current owner has only owned the boat for about a year, so I don't think he knows.

Or maybe I'm off base and it's factory?

    Thanks in advance guys.

Hard to tell from that picture, could be an aftermarket from SEI or it may be an original case shot in primer. The main thing is to take it for a test drive, and then check the magnets on the drain and fill screws for any evidence of metal, fine shavings are normal, chunks are sign of a problem. You may want to check with Gearcaseman on this forum, he is an expert.

Looks like a new case to me, they come with primer and are painted to match the motor color. You see a good deal of them that have not been painted.

OK, thanks guys. I plan to run the boat for a while, and check the compression, I'll check the lower unit also, anything else I should check out with the motor?

OMC Ocean Pro's also have the same type intakes. Worse case ask the guy if it is an OEM or aftermarket. Factory replacements come primed from the plant.
