cleaning the white builup on lower cowl and lower unit

My lower engine parts seem to build up an unusual amount of white scum/chalkyness that I don't see on most boats. The black paint is gray and dull. What do you guys clean this with and why does my engine seem so bad about doing this compared to other guys that fish the same waters I do?

It's deposits from hard water. You have to clean it off regularly and keep the mid section waxed to help keep some of it off.
Simple Green Water Spot Remover works great for getting it off. Some say distilled vinegar in a 50/50 solution with water works as well but I haven't tried that. Spray it down heavily, scrub it, then rinse THOROUGHLY. Then wax the midsection and lower cowling.
