    trailer resto questions...

is it possible to do a good repaint on a boat trailer without taking it to a sand blaster? the trailer under my winner is starting to look rough and have been thinking about wanting to clean it up again. fresh paint, replace the wiring and the boards. i know the trailer has atleast two coats of paint. there's been a coat of black brushed on by the previous owner but it appears the original color was gold. any thoughts on doing the job right without paying a sand blaster?

I was going to do this as well before mine came back out. You could paint but look to do the same thing in 5 years. You can cover it up but any rust will come back. The body guy I talked to said he'd done many and now won't do them without blasting first due to too many complaints he had with them coming back thru the door a year to two years later. If you're gonna strip it don't and redo it all anyway why not put an extra 150 into it to have it done. I was quoted 90 for the guy to come in and do mine.

if the shop here had told me 150 it'd be done by now. the story i got was about 4 times that just for blasting. that was with me doing all the prep like pulling the boat, winch, boards and lights. basically it would show up as a bare trailer. it was bad enough that i thought about just buying another trailer.

WOW!!! I was quoted $400 for blasting (guy comes in with a mobile unit and does it in his shop), And 2 coats of industrial epoxy paint with clear. He was even going to lay vinyl pins back on the trailer.

maybe i need to get the boat off the trailer and drop it off at your house. makes me think these people weren't too interested in doing the work.

Sandblasted then 2 coats of primer,2 coats of black Imron,3 coats of clear Imron with blue flakes in it. The only way to get it to last. Trailer is a 97 Astro. New everything.

ASTRO...your trailer looks great! Where did you leave your boat when you were re-doing the trailer? I'm in Dayton and need to do mine. Did you leave it in that cemetary pond that is in your picture?

what kinda money you got wrapped up in your trailer resto? i'd be happy just in having it blasted painted and cleared. pins and flake would be an extra for me.

No I set it on 4 big dump truck floats(tires) inside my building at work and took it off with a crane and a fork truck. I made a piece to slide up in the tounge to hold the trailer so I could rotate it around.I have $800.00 to $1000.00 for everything including 4 new Goodyears, aluminum fenders, carpet, backing plates and brake lines, had the rear steps behind the fenders made new and I welded them on and made new pieces that hold my little side boards, painted the pin stripes on. I mean I totally redone everything on it, I would pull it anywhere without hesitating. Where at in Dayton do you live? Maybe we could take it off at my work till you get the trailer done. I do sandblasting, It's worth the $$ too have it done for a clean finish. There is other media the blaster can use for a nice finish, Coal slag, corn cob, soda, The main thing is that the blaster not pit your trailer, But if any blaster has been doing for a while they will know what too use. Just stripping it will not take care of the rust and you will not be happy with the end product plus the labor and $$ you spent. If you can spend the extra $$ too have it blasted and a quality paint, it will last for many yrs too come. If you don't your just covering up bad and will be wasting $$$$. Jusy my 2cents. Who yanked my chain...

Re: trailer resto questions... (allen m)

i'm all for doing it right as i'm not interested in doing it twice. i guess the better question would be whats a fair price on having a boat trailer blasted? the boat is 18.5' so i would guess the trailer total length to be about 21'. this trailer has quite a big of tongue length. open "c" channel style framing....

I think I paid a couple hundred dollars a few years ago from my trailer. I removed all the necessary equipment though (lights, wiring, tires and wheels, etc.).

bbnate804, If it is a C channel frame and you pull the lights and all hardware, even the bunks, Because you don't want sand in the carpet. About $250.00. But it has too have a primer shortley afterwards, it don't take long for rust too form. Also if you handle it with bare hands the oil's from your hands with leave rust spots , so use gloves. Also you might have too repack the wheel bearings, sometimes sand get pass the seals.I hope this helps... Just how i do things for my blasting service.
