    lake amistad 7/21-24

what a lake....hard to believe in 100+ degree temps that a rookie like me could catch fish all day three days in a row! put in at diablo east and fished grass lines in 22 to28 ft with tx rigs ,c-rigs, dropshots( motor oil worms, watermelon red ), and an occasional deep crank. water temps were from 82/ 85 degrees. had several fish in the six range. many 3 to four and more that our share of 13 to 14inch fish...if we wanted to follow schoolers we could have had 60 to 100 a day..birds were working in the mouth of the devils river, castle canyon and box canyon..fishing was best on fri. and progressively slowed the next few days. watched my buddy lose an 8+...and had a few just break our leaders...who knows...CAN"T WAIT TO GET BACK!!!

Tim Amistad will be fine in the fall and it ain't but a hop, skip, and a jump from Abilene. One word of caution in Abilene, watchout for Reggie and Ron.

Now Skip you know I'm harmless, it's that Reggie you have to watch out for.

Tim--- Amistad is about 250 miles from Abilene. It takes 4 1/2 hours to drive there from here.

We went through Abilene from Burkburnett. If I remember right it is 94 miles to San Angelo and about 114 miles to the AF Marina. HWY277 down to 90 then about 5-10 miles gets you there. 3-4 hours tops. Have Fun

    Re: lake amistad 7/21-24 (Skipper)

tim, if you can manage to catch amistad on the first or second cold front in the fall the topwater fishing is literally beyond description. i've been there twice during fronts and have averaged 150 a day (2 in a boat) on topwater..the worse weather the better they hit. really fun when a twenty+ striper takes straighten the hooks on your yellow magic!!!! my favorite day of the year is the day deer season opens.lol. love having 50k+ acres of bass infested lake to myself. i fished fork in the 80's when it was really hot and amistad is better by a good bit. now if i could just find someone to show me how to catch smallies in the devils river my life would almost be complete!!!!

About 4.5 hours from my door, that includes a stop for a breakfast burrito and coffee on the way. Pretty easy driving, mostly two lane road but it is all in good shape. Now if I can just find a spare couple of days...........

    Re: lake amistad 7/21-24 (Triton-T)

I have fished Allen Henry probably 6 or 7 years ago and it is a great little lake. But the Money Grabbing Lubbock City Council Members put a permit required on the lake and set it so high that allot of clubs and people stopped fishing the lake. It will cost you now : $8 per person plus $8 for the boat per day. So if you and a buddy went up there for 2 days it would cost you $48 for 2 days of fishing. With the price of gas and motel rooms everyone from here just quit fishing the lake. There has been some 13+ lb Bass caught last year and this year, so it is a great lake, but the cost just runs allot of Basser off, me included. I don't mind paying to use a lake, but their prices are outrageous.

Man, they are proud of that lake! I thought Fayette was high. They used to be $4/vehicle, and went to $4/person. I almost quit going when they did that. Can't imagine paying $16 for me and my boat.

I know what ya'll mean, it's not close enough to drive up just for a day, I camped there once, on the dirt patch the call a campground, that suched no amenities neither, they get all this funding from TPWD and don't share, kinda like Squaw Creek in a since. They have one boat ramp, even though it's 5 lanes wide, I'm sure it's paid for by now, I have e-mailed there city council, but the money grubbin B@$tards never respond. Supposedly there are plans to build campground facilities, we'll see!

    Re: lake amistad 7/21-24 (Triton-T)

I get up to Alan Henry some, haven't been since the middle of May. I am planning on taking my son up there tomorrow afternoon and fish until about 11:00 pm, loading the boat and sleeping in the suburban and fishing Sat morning unitl about 10:00.
It does make for a long day to drive up in the morning, fish and then drive back late in the evening, but some times it is well worth it!!!
