    ticking noise?

i have a 98 150 Fitch engine on my boat, my brother in law said he hears a ticking noise at mid range from the engine from passenger side of the boat. i thought i heard it the last time i went out, but i have stopped and put the boat in neutral and revved-up the engine and can't hear a thing, also he said he can't here it at full throttle. is there any thing you guys can think of that would make a noise like that only at mid range? any ideals or do i need to tell him to get a hearing test. thanks oldfishinfool

    Yes. Your lower unit.

Pull the bottom plug and see if you have metal shavings on it. If you don't, you need to change your fluid anyway, if you do, you need to change your lower unit.

T, have you changed props? Wouldn't hurt to look at the l/u oil if ya haven't lately. I know ya just changed the L/u not long ago. How many did ya get the other night?? We picked up 6. ttt

hey mike, i just changed the l/u oil a couple of months ago and it looked fine, but i am going to check it again tomorrow. the noise that my brother in law said he heard was more like a crisp ticking, maybe like it is jumping fire somewhere anyway after i check the l/u oil and if it is alright, i am going to the lake tomorrow nite and take the cowling off and see if i can see any fire jumping from the plug wires or anywhere else. and about the fishing i only caught 4 it was a slow nite. could you e-mail the guy you were telling me about[gearcase man] and ask him about my problem, he would probably know if it sounds like something is wrong with the l/u. thanks oldfishinfool

Before you go tomorrow nite, pull the cover and look for dark, smoky spots around the wires, coils, etc. If it was that then I would think it would be causing problems in your running too. You looked like you was running fine last Fri!!
