Chris Lane Skirts Disaster on St. Johns When Boat Does 360s
by Del Milligan
Chris Lane was racing up the St. Johns River Thursday afternoon on his way to weigh in at the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament in Palatka when his boat hit floating debris.
The boat spun around a couple of times and filled up with water, but Lane and his passenger were OK.
“We did a couple 360s — the whole back of the boat went forward, and we ended up completely under the water, then popped back up and we were sitting in nothing but water all the way up to our chests. The boat slowly came back up, started pumping, and (Terry) Butcher picked me up,” Lane said on Bassmaster.com.
Lane tied his boat to a buoy, and Butcher took him to the weigh-in, arriving on time to avoid a pound-per-minute penalty.
Lane, a Lakeland native living in Guntersville, Ala., was in 57th place with 9 pounds, 6 ounces.
He said he didn’t know what his Legend boat ran into.
“I didn’t feel anything, but obviously I hit something with the way the impact was, and the problems that we saw,” Lane said Friday morning on Bassmaster.com. “The most important thing is that we (he and his official marshal) were safe. Thank God for Legend boats.”
After the weigh-in, the Mercury service team towed Lane’s boat back to the marina and repaired damage to the lower unit so Lane could compete again on Friday.
