    special oil

on friday im picking up my new baby, a 03 stratos with an 03 225 ho. my boss was telling me that when its cold out i have to run a special oil through the motor, becuase the cold makes the traditional oil thicker and dosent inject right. he has a 175 ficht. i know nothing about oil, as i was just going to run the johnson/evinrude oil that you can buy at the stores. he says to use hd100 instead of hd 40 when its cold. so what does that mean...

The best oil you can use at any temperature is XD100. It is a full synthetic oil. Other oils available from BRP are XD50 or XD30. XD50 is the only other BRP oil recomended but in extremely cold conditions it is "thicker" than XD100 & in rare cases can trigger an alarm. Go for the XD100.

The important thing is to let them warm up. Fitch cylcles oil thru tank a good 5 min at idle . 10 if water temp is below 50 degrees.

    Re: (bailey_d)

In cold weather I switched to xd-100 to stop the false no oil alarms, and I haven't looked back. I like the the way the motor runs, the oil looks, etc...... I get it from friends that know someone that sells it in bulk for better prices than I can get it for, or if I'm somewhere and I find a dealer that sells in bulk for a decent price I'll get a couple gallons. I always keep a couple jugs with me. IMHO the xd-100 is the best thing you can do for your engine, also it will clean it and keep it clean.

XD-100 is the best for your motor , I use it in a carbed Johnson and it runs better and little to no smoke!!

i asked the tech at the dealer when i picked it up, and he says "these motors arent programmed to run xd100. use the xd50 thats what it was made to take. use the 100 on the e techs thats all" i was like.... oook. what does he mean by that? or does he have no idea what hes talking about

Unfortunately some dealers just don't know whats going on & do not keep up to date.

The fact is that the "XD50 SETTING" has nothing to do with the oil. You can put either XD50 OR XD100 oil in your motor. Yes the recommended SETTING for your particular motor may be XD50 BUT the best oil for your motor is the BRP XD100.

    BINGO !

If you really want to confuse the boy, ask him to program your motor for the XD-30 oil instead of the XD-50. Then tell him you will premix XD-100 at 100:1 in the boat's gas tank for a bit of extra protection. When you are done, ask him if he recommends the Split-Fire sparkplugs to prevent oil fouling.
