    Johnson GT150 Problems

Help guys! My father has a 86 model gt 150 that is wanting to surge while running on plane. It seems to run fine until around a high RPM. Will run up then die off for a sec then rev back, etc. etc. Sometimes when ran wide open it will die completely. We have had the carbs cleaned, replaced the stator and the timming arm under the fly wheel (crank trigger or whatever it is called) None have made any difference. We are thinking maybe a fuel problem. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!!

Push in the key to activate the choke when it happens and see if it picks up. If it does, then its fuel.

Yeah but should we be reving it on the hose that high??? Has to be around 3800 before the problem starts!! What if the fuel filter was installed upside down or backwards as to what it was before?? Im just the middle man here so no laughing. He said they changed it around for some reason, maybe????????

A new stator, trigger(timing coil), two power packs, and epoxy the loose flywheel magnets back in place cured mine from surging. But, most importantly do not under any circumstance rev the motor over 1500 on the hose.

If you can't run with the big dogs, just stay on the porch.

Went thru the same problem with a 85 GT150 on a boat I used to have,It was a power pack.I replaced both them for around $200. I took mine off and notice the wires coming out of the pack had rub againest the block and had been shorting out againest it.

    Re: Johnson GT150 Problems (spotman)

Check the pulse tube from the powerhead to the VRO. (if Still Equiped) These are known to clog up with carbon and hinder fuel pump operation.

    Good Luck
