    Best Engine for my 400dc

I have a 95 Javelin 400dc and have had a 200 merc and now a 200 yamaha vmax hpdi on it and my fastest speed is 63 mph at all different heights and 10 inch hydraulic jackplate.. running a 24 tempest plus.. What engine should I put on this boat to get its full potential.. Everyone else seems to be getter much better speeds.

Re: Best Engine for my 400dc (Trevor Starratt)

im runnin a 94 400 single console, with 2 people, 1/3 tank of gas, 10" plate, 200 johnson venom witha 25 raker and gps'd 70 mph runnin 5900 rpm. plate was about 2.5 inches below pad.
how far you raising the plate up?
i dont know how much of a difference it really makes, but my water pick ups in the lower unit have been modified to alow the plate to go higher without losing water pressure to soon.

Trevor, it's sounds more like a set-up problem (prop, trim, prop height) rather than needing more horsepower.

    Re: (Jason1)

Its a 70 mph rig with a 200 3 liter, 75 with a 225 3 liter, and 80 mph with a 250, and yes I know thats "overpowering it" but it will handle it no problem and if it was mine id have a 250 proxs on it. With a small block 200 2.5 literish motor its about a 65-68 mpg rig.

Is a 225 Pro xs in your budget. It would cost you about $11-12K. I know a fellow with this motor on a 400. It will run high 70s. 225 HO probably was a tru 225hp. They had a tendency to lean out and burn up the #6 cyl. There was not 25 more hp from a 200 to a 225 in the venom/vindicator series.

There was in the 200 venom/vindicator and 225 HO Johnny that was a bad boy thirsty ass motor.

Re: Best Engine for my 400dc (ep72)

So I should be looking for a big block motor apposed to a small black.. I have a vindicator in mind.. but if that isn't going to gain me anything its a waste of money.. my hpdi is a 2.6L I know of a 250 3.0l merc efi It is overpowering but as long as the insurance company doesn't mind neither do I lol.

Yeah big block v6 torque will move that boat much better than a small block.

Sure would. Much better than your 200 2.6 liter Yam, they are kind of a dog performance wise.

Ok.. I will likely do that then for starters.. But still don't understand why with 2 people loaded I am running 60 flat.

Trevor, my Stratos 186XT is a "slow" hull design, only weighs about 100lbs less than your Javelin, it has 85 less HP than your boat, and it will run an honest 50mph with 2 people and tourney gear.
If your only getting 60 mph then I still say it's something wrong with the set-up. I'd hate to see you spend money on another engine only to have the same problem.

no,the vindicator carbed motors are 3.0 fingerported block, the 3.3 block is the ficht dfi motor.
i have a 97 225 venom i'll trade you even for that hpdi,it would work well on my 295 stratos, save me some gas too.if you can bring it to me i'll switch the motors for you to boot.
