E-TEC HO gearcase differences for 2008

    The L2-Type Gearcase for 2008

With the introduction of the Evinrude® E-TEC®
250 H.O., questions have come up regarding
back-fitting this gearcase to older outboards
and if there is interchangeability of internal
    parts between the gearcases.

The L2-Type gearcase will now be standard
    on H.O. models.

    Its features include:

    - external water pick up screens

    - .54 (1.86:1) gear ratio for 150 H.O./200 H.O.

    - .58 (1.71:1) gear ratio for 225 H.O.* /250 H.O.

    * 225 H.O. models with “G” suffix.

    Important Notes:

    - L2-Type internal parts and gears are NOT
    interchangeable with other L-type
    gearcases.

    - Propeller requirements may change on
models equipped with a .58 ratio gearcase.
Typically, two inches less pitch may be
    needed.

    I have a 2003 225 HO. Will a 2008 225 HO be different? How?

So the 2008 225 HO may or may not...be the same as my 2003 HO

Re: E-TEC HO gearcase differences for 2008 (SEAHORSE)

Hey Seahorse I have ordered a boat with a 2008 200 ETEC HO on it. Can you or someone else explain to me what the gear ratio 1.86:1 means ? Why a higher gear ratio on the smaller engines than the bigger ones?

    Thanks

It's all about the power of the motor. The 150 H.O. and 200 H.O. do not have enough power to worry about having to turn a 29 or 30 pitch prop. The 225 H.O. and 250 H.O. run into issues with prop availability. I ran a 225 H.O. on my '06 Blazer and had to run a 30 pitch.

The lower gears in the bigger motors allows it to spin a smaller prop to the same speeds. You will probably turn the same prop as someone running a 250 H.O. on a 201 (or at least close to the same).

    Seahorse.

Is there a way to order a 2008 225 HO with L2 Type 1.71:1 geacase?? Seems like the L 2 would be a liitle faster on top end. I am getting ready to order a new boat soon.

Just tell the dealer that you want the motor with the "G" on the end of the model number.

Yes, you can get the L2 on the 225HO now. I am being told they are now shipping with the L2 as standard (you may need to confirm with your dealer if you have an order).

Thanks for the input. Do you think the L2 would be a little faster??

Re: E-TEC HO gearcase differences for 2008 (Promaxxum)

It may not be faster, but it's going to be less succeptable to the low water pressure which results in the overheat alarms that some people experience. The L2 is going to be the better gearcase on lighter boats and will really be better overall because of the availability of props to run on those gears.

Re: E-TEC HO gearcase differences for 2008 (1niceStratos)

The water pickup is lower with removable screens. I would think being able to run the engine a little higher may help with speed. Doesnt seem BRp would put out a 225 Etec HO that would be slower.

    We'll see.

The 250 H.O. is obviously faster. We'll just have to see how the new 225 H.O.'s perform.

Simply put... if a 2008 225 HO with the L2 gearcase (on a Stratos 200 XL) is slower than a 2007/2006 225 HO - I dont need it

Does anybody have pics of this case? Are the water pickups just lower and remain on the sides or are there inlets in the front also? Can the sides be blocked to run higher????

I think the new L2 gearcase inlets are located lower.... with a removable screen. Seahorse and Rusty63 may have pics

    Re: (Promaxxum)

The water pick up does appear to be lower on mine. In regards to the 200/ 225 VS the 250/ 300 HP the latter 2 also have larger CuIn displacements. They have larger blocks 210 cu.in or 3.4 litre.

    No inlets on the front.
