    Engine temp

My model and SN is at my avitar.

When at idle, or trolling should the engine come to full temp?

Mine runs pretty cold until shes running hard, then the temp go up to about 160 (according to the crappy gauge). But it reads very low when trolling.

Is this normal? Should it get hotter and then the thermostats regulate the temp?

    Thanks in advance.

You should check the temps on the heads with a hand held temp devise, not a guage, the temps should run between 140 and 160 degrees.

The Factory Thermos will do the job just fine.

Are you aware that your motor has 3 thermostats in it?

The ones in each head control the cylinder block temps, and the one accessed by removing the lower port motor pan, and it's pressure relief valve control the cylinder head temps.

I am aware of the lower thermo; that was changed last season due to corrosion of the aluminum housing it sits in. The same year I changed the 2 on the powerhead. Still what i don't know is...should the engine; at idle/trolling at idle; come to full temp?

    Re: (van)

You want to see close to 140° or a bit higher at idle for good combustion. Don't forget to check, clean, and reseal the pressure relief valve near the 3rd thermostat.

To help keep that thermostat housing from corroding, add a ground wire from it to the engine block. Solder ring terminals to each end and install them with a star (toothed) lockwasher under the bolt heads.

    Re: (SEAHORSE)

OK, thanks Seahorse, so if its not coming to temp (like mine)

What do you think the remedy is?

I would think the thermostats would control the engine temp even if the seawater is cold. They are both new and OEM.

I believe low temp is why I get some fouling when trolling/idling for long times.
It starts to run rough then I gun it a bit, blow out some smoke/oily smoke and it OK for a while.
