    setting up a 285

I have a 07 285 with a vmax 150 carbed motor. I am getting about 58mph wot at 5900 rpms. In the manuel I think max rpms are around 5500. I want to add a jackplate, I was wondering if I need to go to a bigger prop. I am running a 23m now and was thinking of going to a 25p tempest, that should bring my rpms down to near 5500 right? I dont want to put that much $$ if it isnt going to be right. thanks for the help

same boat, same engine. I have a tempest 24 pitch. GPS 58 with half tank of gas, full live well, 2 people and full gear. That was this weekend. Air temp was 51, winds 10 to 15 out of the NW, I was heading S.

The 5500 RPMs are Yamaha's recommended operating range, and is a very conservative number. The motor is capable of operating at higher RPMs with no problem. The rev limiter on your motor is 6175. I ran the 23M at about 6100 RPMs on my boat, which is probably a little higher than I should run constantly. I just went to 24 Fury and I am turning it at 5800 RPMs and 66 MPH. In my opinion, 5700-5900 is about where you want to be, and those RPMs should have no adverse effect on that Yammer. As far as a jack plate goes, I highly recommend one, it will definitely improve your numbers once you get the set up right.

2003 Stratos 185 with 150 Johnson & 24 Raker &8inch Detweiler jackplate....62GPS at 5350 rpm. 2004 285 MagnumXL with 175 Johnson &6inch RiteHite with 24Raker 67.8GPS 5300 rpm. Was told this wasn't possible with a 24 Raker & prop slip calculator, but verified with 2 different GPS & tachs were verified by one of the best Evinrude & Johnson mechanics around period. If I were you I'd go with an 8 inch plate as it was a lot smoother operating all the way around. No catching water when sitting down & no shooting up when hitting pad.
