bad gauge or sending unit went out

My gas gauge has been off as to the readings..for a while now. 1/4 tank off. I put 15 gallons in and the gauge doesn't register anything. I have 04 295 pro xl, how hard is it to take the access panel off the deck behind the seats? Will I have to remove the seats? I found 7 or 8 screws. Does this panel lift forward or straight up? Which will be the best sending unit to replace the old one with. I would like to try to do this myself. thanks

Must be something about 2004 Pro XL's in Indiana, I have a 04 195 ProXL. The gas gauge does the same thing. Had it replaced before it was a year old, the dealership out west on 36 told me the is the nature of the beast. Still doing the same thing 5 years later.

I will be watching this post, might change mine.

They are difficult to access. You will probably have to take out the seats and uncover the entire tank to get the sending unit out. The standard senders look like the Fill valve in a toilet with the float and ball with a rod. There is some aftermarket ones that read more accurate. Wemausa.com makes some good units thats what I bought.
