    Magnum package

I have read some of the posts regarding the "magnum" packages mentioned in regards to hp rating. Would appreciate any info you may have regarding this subject. I was wondering:

What is a "magnum" package. What is altered on the boat that would allow for increased horsepower rating?

Can a boat be retrofitted with a mag package?

How expensive would it be to do this?

I have a 2004 275 pro xl which I love except for one thing. It is rated for 125 maximum hp. Since no one makes a 125, then one is mainly limited to a 115, which doesn't help me any as I already have a 90 v4 that runs really well (for a 90 hp). Would be nice to drop a 135 on the back of this baby. That would be about right far as I am concerned (from a power perspective anyway). Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Magnum package (StratosDadRI)

Thank you for the useful info and the link. Interesting. Reading one of the other posts I learned the formula used for calculating max. HP ratings. Adding a jack plate would effectively increase the overall length of the boat in one aspect. I wonder if this is the only reason that the magnum package is able to accommodate the higher HP rating?

I think marketing and product lineup may have something to do with it as well.

    Re: Magnum package (Duane Harper)

Stratos responded to my e-mail today and said the following in case someone else is interested:

"Unfortunately, The Max HP rating of a boat cannot be changed after it
leaves the factory. This boat may have been available with a Magnum
Package, but if it was not ordered and built as a Magnum, then you
cannot change it after the fact."

    For information only.

I have a 2004 275 pxl with a 115 I am gonna upgrade it to a magnum with a 150 on it. If you add a hotfoot change your hp sticker by using a really good scanner
add a jackplate and change a couple hull stickers whalaaa whos gonna know .they would have to run your vin # and who does that .I aint ever seen a coastguard boat on any of my lakes.I talked to stratos and they told me that the 275 is made for a 150 the hull has no problems with a 150.But Im a redneck and dont really give a hoot

Your VIN may never get ran until you have an accident. Then, when they run it you may be wishing you wouldn't have gotten that extra 3-5 mph. Just food for thought.

You may not give a hoot, but someone else reading this and thinking about doing the same thing might.

    Re: Magnum package (izzymills)

Insurance companies look up the boat and the hp rating in their actuarial tables. Too much of a good thing (e.g. hp) is frowned upon and they may not insure. I had a Champion 198 when they first came out in 2004. A 225hp on a 19ft boat wasn't in their list. My insurance company wouldn't insure it until I provided evidence that it was coast guard approved.

"IF" you are able to get it insured, the insurance company will pay for damages to your rig or another's rig that you hit. Of course when the insurance company asks what size motor it is you could lie and tell them the one that's on it now. Then, if there's an accident when the VIN numbers are turned in and they see that you lied about the motor they would deny the claim.

The bad thing is that will not be all you'd be liable for. If you accidentally hit another boat and, God forbid, kill someone in it, or just kill someone in your boat, having your's or someone else's boat repaired will be the least of your worries. You would automatically be deemed neglegent because you were not operating the vessel within the guidelines set by the manufacturer. So, the civil lawsuits, not to mention the legal ramifications (possibly neglegent homicide) you could face FAR outway the 3-5 mph you might gain. But then again, what are the chances of something bad happening?
