if you take it off there should be numbers and length on it and manufacture name.
you may want to replace the whole system if is th eoriginal one.just be sure to pull a small rope through when you remove it to use to pull it back.if you cut the ends off at the motor it makes them very much easier to pull out..

Re: fixing broken stearing cables (tuckerabbi)

Before tackeling it yourself you need to make sure there is enough room to install the new ones. Most of the time where the cables come out of the boat there isn't enough room to make the turn into the steering tube of your engine. You can either do a visiual or try pulling one out of the engines steering tube. If it will come our ok chances are it will go in as well.

If it is a dual steering set-up you will need to adjust the front tube to get the play out of the new steering and reduce torque. Make sure you lube the cable well when putting it back in also.

Good luck, if you need anymore help or parts let us know.

I bought a 2002 Triton TR185. The boat was garage kept and only run 2 times. Everything on the boat is new in apperance. and the outboard runs great. However the stearing is tight and I am not able to turn the motor. I have no idea as to how to replace the cable. I have been trying to locate an owners manual for the Mecuary 150 and the 2002 Triton. can anyone help me out. Thanks. firstsgt50@aol.com
