Noticed the trim gauge jumping around. Trim up and the gauge pegs full down. 1988 200XP. Cycled the sending unit by hand when I got home. Gauge jumps around wildly. How do you verify trouble is with sending unit? Appreciate any advice.

If you have verified that there are no loose wires on the gauge, then you can test the sender using an ohmmeter. Disconnect the wires either at the sender itself or at the dash. Using an ohmmeter across the wires, you should see approx 1 ohm in the full up position and 88 ohms in the full down position. Also, as you move the sender arm, you should see the ohmmeter reflect a smooth reading up and down on the meter. A jerky reading would indicate the sender is bad. It sounds like a defective sender to me, but best to check it out...
