Speedometer and steering questions

My speedometer is not working. I was just wondering if there is a common problem with them that I should look for. And also, I'm in desperate need of a new steering system. Its to the point where two hands are needed at all times when steering. I have a Javelin Renegade 19' F/S (150HP). I'd love to get a hydaulic system, but its out of my budget right now. What would be a suitable mechanical steering system as a replacement?

Lower unit of the motor near the nose facing the back of your boat is a small hole. Thats where the speedo gets it water. Usually a small piece of debry will get in there and clogg the hole. Try using a small drill bit and do it with your hand, not a drill.

Sorry in advance if this is a dumb question. Can you check the speedo with ear muffs or does it have to be in water?

Need to put boat in the water & run it.

You can point an air gn (from an air compressor) at the hole and let fly with a little air, that will do the same as water, just don't bury the needle.

Shazer, does it feel like the steering is pulling hard to one side after the boat gets going? or, does it seem hard to turn at any time?

Could use a stream of water from a nozzle. Won't peg the speedo but will make it more. Just have to aim it in the hole, you will get soaked though.

It is hard to turn all the time. Even when its out of water.

Since it is a 150 hp, you could get the BayStar hydraulic steering. 689.99. It's easy to intall, hardest part would be routing the cables thru the gunwale. Was going to buy a boat that need the steering replaced, was quoted 450 for dual rack and pinion steering.
