    Possible Scam?

    Hey guys,

I have my boat for sale right now and I recieved an e-mail from someone interested in buying it.

Question is, I don't know if this is a scam or not... I gave him the info on the boat and he said thats what he wanted and agreed on the price...

Thats all good and everything, but he then said he would have his bank send me a cashiers check for a certain amount to put a deposit on it... Cool...

This is where it gets funny... He then said he would send a surveyer to check out the boat and I would have to give the surveyor 6k... upon the inspection, he would send the remaining balance...

I have only sold one other boat on my own and not sure what to do...

I have seen some scams before but this one seems different... I can post copies of the e-mail...

It seems legit, but not sure... take a look...

    "Jose,

Everything sounds good and your offer is accepted.

Pls I will be out of town on these dates 03/13 to 04/08/2007 and I will wish to make a deposit payment so that you can reserve the boat for me.

I will instruct my banker to send you a $26,000 cashiers check which you'll hold as deposit while my surveyor will come over for the inspection,as soon as he confirms that everything is o.k,the balance of your payment will be provided and the title will be transfered.

    Please advice the following info.

    i....Complete Names for payment.....

    ii....Billing Address....

    iii...Contact phone #....

NB; When you receive the $26,000 deposit, you're to remmitt $6,000 to my surveyor so that he can use it to make arrangment regarding the inspection, meaning that you'll hold $20,000 for the deposit.

The remaining balance will be paid subject to inspection by my surveyor.

Below is my address incase you'll need it for the title papers.

    XXXX E. 2800 N. RD.,
    Dwight IL. 60420

Waiting for your answers so that my banker can send you the payment."

    Scam or no scam?

    Thanks,

    Jose

That's the short of it. Any time they say 'their bank' will send funds and 'you are to remit' such and such amount to the 'surveyor', don't give out too much information.

do not have anything to do with the person and do not reply to any more mails or phonecalls anytime you have to pay up front to sell your boat other than posting an ad on the BBC or a like place/publication it is a scam and you will never see your money and what may be worse you may lose the boat. Banks even if they say the check is good do not REPEAT do NOT check if a bank money order is good it may take up to a month to come back as a fraud and then you have to reimburse the money and any fees and such and you may have lost the boat since you signed it over to the person.

SCAM! I had the same type of email when I listed my boat this fall. Once you deposit the "check" and wire the money you will be out the about listed! I asked for proof of ID and for either a money order or personal check and the guy quit emailing me. I stay far far away from this one!

Tell him you will hold it for him without a deposit til he gets back, then he is welcome to come out and look at it and test drive.

Hopefully you are not going to do this deal after all the advise on this board. This is a scam that has been used for years on boats cars, and even real estate. I almost did a similar deal and at the last minute,I decides to do a quick search. Turns out I was in the middle of a sam that would have left me severly financially damaged. Fraud is everywhere.
