    201 w/ 27" tempest set-up

    Hey guys,

I am wanting to try a 27 tempest plus on my 04 201 w/ 04 225 ho DI evinrude. Can you tell me what size pvs plugs I need to use or try with this prop. I will start at 3" below pad and go from there with the engine height. I like the way the boat runs with a 26 raker, but that prop wants to many rpm's and I am hoping that the tempest will solve my problem. With the raker, tournament load, I could easily go over 6000 rpm's, BUT I DON'T! Trimed down to 5800 and running 71-72 gps, the boat runs flat. I would try a 28 raker, but I think the hole shot will suffer to much. I know you can't have it both ways with hole shot and top end, but will 27 tempest be the right choice?

    Thanks,

    Mark H.

Mark, I have a 96 201 pro xldc with 06 e-tec 225 ho running 28 raker 2. I had a 6" manual jack plate on boat (just changed to 8" hydraulic) The hole shot is not bad with boat loaded down.

    Re: 201 w/ 27" tempest set-up (Mark H.)

Mark, I run the 27 Tempest on my 03 201 with Evinrude DI 225 HO. Its an awesome prop. Holeshot isn't neck breaking but its very good. It carries a load better than any prop I've ran on anything. It will run 74 gps with just me in the boat and 2 guys, full of fuel and the livewells full it will run 73 and every now and then I can still get 74 with all that weight. I don't know why but weight just doesn't slow that prop down. I was running the 26 raker2 and it didn't carry the weight very well at all. Also, when I switched to the Tempes from the Raker2, I had to take the jackplate way up from where I ran the raker at. The tempest wants to be a lot higher in the water. I have a hydro plate so I'm not sure exact motor height but I was at 3 inches with the raker2 and I know I come up a lot with the Tempest. The Tempest just has a totally different feel also. It makes the entire hull lift, which is probly why it carries the weight so well.
My Raker2 is with Mark having another inch of pitch added to it. I had him balance and blueprint it and after that I could tach way too much with it so I had to send it back to him. Also, it wasn't lifting the hull as good so he was going to fix that also. As soon as I get the Raker2 in good shape I'm sending him the Tempest for the same thing. Should pick up some more speed with it then and it should be a very impressive runner for a 201 then.

I'll look tomorrow and see what plugs I have in the Tempest. I tried a few more combo's and what I have in there now seemed to work best for me. Changing anything either made it a dog out of the hole or made it blow out bad.

Thanks for the info guys. Chad, let me know what pvs plugs your are using, at least it will give me a starting point. Should get my prop around mid-week so I can try it out.

    Re: 201 w/ 27" tempest set-up (Mark H.)

Remembered to check my pvs plug setup today and I have 2 large hole plugs and 1 small. This seems to work well on my setup and works well even if I'm light or heavy and even takes off great if I have the jackplate way up. If I'm way up on the jackplate and taking off with the livewells full and turning sharp at the same time I have to be carefull because I'll get a little blowout but if I drop the plate a little I can take off any way I want and not blow out any. I'm running a 8 inch jackplate also, I don't know if a different setback might change things or not but I'd say that same plug setup will get you really close. Good luck with it.

I fished a tournament Sat by myself and while running down the river I raised the plate a little more than usual and I went from 74 on the gps down to 73. Felt like it lost its bite a little. I bumped the trim down just a hair and I could feel the prop bite good again and the hull lift some more and ended up getting 76 out of it. I can't wait to get this prop balanced and blueprinted and see what it does then.

    Re: 201 w/ 27" tempest set-up (Mark H.)

Ya, keep us posted on what numbers you get and what plug combo ends up working best for you. I don't know if the plug combo will need to be changed for you or not but I would at least think the same combo I run would put you pretty close. Mine spins up pretty well perfectly with the plugs I'm running and that was what was in there when I got the prop. Everytime I'd change one it would make it worse. I do know one thing, I was shocked how just the slightest change in the plugs would make a major difference in how it performed on its holeshot. I never would have thought those would be so sensitive to change but they sure seem to be on my combo. This was my first experience with any of the merc props.

I just got my balanced and blueprinted prop back from Mark today. If it runs as good as it looks its going to be a screamer. I can tell by looking at what he did that its going to give me more lift like the tempest did. He added an inch of pitch to it also this time and some more cup on the tips for lift. I can't wait to take it out and try it. I just have a feeling its going to make my boat scream now. If it works the Tempest will be on its way for a visit to him also. If he can make it better than it is now its going to be a rocket when that one comes back.

But keep me posted on the numbers you get with yours and the pvs plug setup you use. I'm always curious to what other people get out of a similar setup.

    Re: 201 w/ 27" tempest set-up (chad201proxl)

I got to run my 27 tempest this weekend and here is what I found out. I have a 7" slidemaster jackplate and my engine height is 3.5" below pad. I know I said I was going to start at 3" below pad but, I thought I should start with this prop at the same height as my 26 raker and a 27 trophy plus so I could compare it. On friday I got 73.7 gps. That is with me (210Lbs), all my gear (alot of stuff), and 30-35 gallons of gas. I don't think that is to bad because it was at 3 in the afternoon, the temp was 97+, muggy, and the water temp is 90+. Hole shot is ok but not neck-breaking. I still have to watch my rpms so that I don't turn to many. I fished a tournament saturday and I only got 70.1 gps. That speed is with 50 gallons of gas and my partner (240lbs) and his gear. I am going to now go up to 3" below pad and what changes it makes. How does it compare to the other props, it is a little faster than the other two and the hole shot is close on all three, but what I like about the tempest so far is the lift. I'm just not talking about top end lift, I mean from 3500 rpms on up. The boat just feels like it sits higher out of the water. I my lose some of that when I start going up on the jackplate, at least at lower speeds, I will just have to check it out. Also, Chad, I used the same plug set-up you that used, 2 large-one small. I will try some other combos to see if anything is better.

    Thanks,

    Mark H.

    Re: 201 w/ 27" tempest set-up (Mark H.)

Hey Mark, that's good numbers to start off with. I noticed the same thing about the lift that prop gives. Made mine drive like a different boat. I noticed it as soon as the boat broke over the first time I took off with it. Also, when I went to the Tempest I had to go way up on the jackplate from where I ran my raker at. I think I ran the raker at 3 inches below and it done great there but now I have an 8 inch hydro plate and I'm running it within an inch from all the way up. I havn't measured it to find out what it is exactly. When I left the plate down on mine when I first tried it, it was a bear to drive. Started going up on the plate and it smoothed out and I can drive it with one hand on the wheel. The other day I fished a T by myself and I was able to get 75 out of it that morning when it was fairly cool out and 74 the rest of the day with the livewells full. My Humminbird GPS only reads in even numbers so it could have been slightly above or below that.

By the way, how did the 27 Trophy run? I've been wanting to try one of those on mine. I'm thinking I'm going to get rid of my 26 raker2 and get something else. The raker bends to easily for me to use it around here.

    Re: 201 w/ 27" tempest set-up (chad201proxl)

Chad, the 27 trophy plus ran good on my boat, but it does'nt lift the boat like the tempest or the raker. I think that is just the nature of a 4 blade, it just does'nt lift like a 3 blade prop. The tempest with the way my boat is set up is a couple mph's faster than the trophy, but like I said in my other post, I started the tempest at the same height, so from what you have told me I think that when I raise my motor I should get a little faster. Also, I bought this boat from C&O, it was a demo, and Todd I think did the set up for the pro staff guy so I'm sure he had it set up right for the trophy. For me Chad, I just like the way the boat lifts with the tempest over the trophy, and everything I could read or hear about was the tempest or trophy for our boats were the best two props. I don't have alot of seat time with the tempest but I already like it better than the trophy. If you want a second prop and don't like the raker, I would suggest the trophy as a good back-up, but I would run the tempest as my main prop.

    Re: 201 w/ 27" tempest set-up (jvan)

Here's my update for you guys. I went up from 3.5 to 3 inches below pad and the best speed I got was 75.4 (gps), that was with me and all my gear but only about 20 gallons of gas. I still have to watch my rpms so that I don't turn to many. The speed falls off some when I run a full tournament load 72-73mph. I might go up to 2.75 below pad, but I am already getting some prop blow out when the boat breaks over getting on plane, so I may just leave it were its at. Also, holeshot is fine, but when you have 2 livewells full and over a half a tank of gas it is a little bit on the slow side. I think Chad was going to blueprint his 27" tempest, would like to know how that worked out. Jvan, let us know some numbers when you get your prop.

    Thanks,

Hey guys, I still havn't had the Tempest blue printed yet. I decided to wait till this winter and do it while I wasn't using the boat. My numbers are pretty much identical to Marks. I can get in the 75-76 range with just me in the boat loaded and a full tourney load with 2 aboard I get 72-73 also. Even my holeshot sounds about the same as Marks.

Any updates on your set up. I have been running my 27 tempest. The fastest I can go is 71 gps. 3 inches below full tourny load 2 guys over 200lbs.live wells full 1/2 tank gas. speed does not seem to change when live wells are empty and only me in the boat. The only change is hole shot gets worse with full wells and full tank of gas

    Re: 201 w/ 27" tempest set-up (jvan)

I run a 27 Tempest on my 201 a 250 Yami OX66 and turn it 5900rpm @ 77-78 mph...Loaded I can turn 5700 rpm @ 73-75 mph, depending on how heavy...I run from 2.75-3.25" below... You should be getting better speed out of that prop...I also run 3 large hole plugs with one hole wallowed out slightly to make it a little bigger...
