2001 Skeeter sx190

I am looking at a 2001 Skeeter sx190 with a v-max 150. I am having difficulty finding any info between the sx and the zx. My last boat was a 2002 Ranger vs185 with a merc xr6. I am hooked on fishing but I am fairly new to it. I understand the SX is a base model but I don't really need a 45K boat at this time. I guess I am just looking for some input on whether everyone considers the SX a good boat. I also read that there is some wood in the hull rather than 100% composite (good or bad?).

traderdoc...I own a 2002 sx190 and I love the boat, it handles rough water great and with the yammie 150 will get about 60 mph. The difference between the zx and the sx is the zx is wider and will handle up to a 175.

I had a SX 190 for 4 years and absolutely loved it. I second what KeninKC says. Can not go wrong with that boat!

I recently bought an 04' SX190. Garage constraint wouldn't allow me to buy a ZX190 (Jackplate adds about 10" or so to total length). I've fished out of many boats and my biggest concern with getting an sx190 was the absence of jack plate and power steering. While it would be nice to have both of those options, the sx190 performs very well without them. My boat will do 61 gps with 2 people and 3/4 tank of gas. It handles very well and gets out of the hole extremely fast. If you are really hung up on having all of the bells and whistles, then I would go with the zx. Otherwise, the sx is a great boat.

My question to the OP is this:

Why get rid of an '02 Ranger 185vs to get into a '01 Skeeter SX 190??????

Both boats are 18.5'
Both boats are 150hp max
Both boats are basically the same age

The main difference in the SX and ZX 190 is hull design, over all width, and more HP ... all going to the ZX.

Also, if you run across a TZX 190 ..... that's the same boat as a ZX 190. The only thing I can think of that the "ZX" (not SX) has over a 185vs is probably front deck width ...... very noticable standing on the bow.

Personally ..... and I don't know your circumstance ........ but I'd keep my Ranger since it's basically the same size boat and your Ranger probably has higher value.

I know the Ranger 185 is not the smoothest riding vessel Ranger has in the fleet ..... but a lot of what you read on the internet is due to driver and the fact that it's simply a 18.5' boat trying to keep up with 20' boats in the rough stuff.

Thanks Ranger. I bought my ranger in Jan 2011 and got a great deal. I had to up grade some stuff but I loved the boat. I live on the lake but have no dock so I had to keep launching it. My fishing buddy lives real close and his boat is always in the water so mine sat in the garage. I needed to pay some taxes so I sold it. If I could find another deal like the first I would buy another Ranger but I do like the looks of the Skeeter as well.

I've had a 2004 SX190 since 2007 and am very pleased with it. I don't tournament fish so speed is not a big issue for me, and I never caught a fish at 70mph anyway.

Garage space was an issue and the SX gave me the most boat that would fit in the slot allotted for it, and was the cleanest specimen of the boats I was shopping (previously owned by a doctor who took maintained it and upgraded the electronics).

I just upgraded to a dual HDS7/LSS-1 system myself, in fact. Eventually I'll redo the seats and the carpeting, but they're in good shape generally since the boat is always garaged.

Disclaimer: an 18.5' boat is not a 20' and will never be. I don't ask our mule to perform like a race horse either.

In that case (since the Ranger is not there to keep ) ......... I've never been in a SX 190 ...... I just own a TZX 190 w/ HPDI 175.

I can say this ....... this ZX 190 reminds me alot of my old 391 as far as deck space. Truthfully, to me, the front deck is larger on my Skeeter than that +19' boat (and I had the deck extension). It's mostly the width.

I do love my 2.6L HPDI ...... but tha 150 carb'ed Vmax you're looking at is a great motor that is often times refered to as bulletproof.

Deals are out there, you just got to be ready to strike while the irons hot.

I have an 07 SX190 and have been very happy with it except for the porpoising issue. It seems I'm always on the trim in rougher water.

Not sure if you've made up your mind or not, but I have a 2004 Skeeter SX190 with the Yamaha 150VMAX, (bought it new), and I love it. It gets on plane almost instantly and handles very well. It maneuvers very well through the trees. It goes 60mph (GPS) with a full tank and 2 people, but as someone mentioned earlier, you don't catch many fish at that speed anyway.

I spend all my time on the front deck, which is adequate. The rear deck is a little small with the seat in, and the rear compartments could afford to be a bit larger. That said, no one has ever complained about fishing in the back.

The motor is a work horse. It runs like a top. I am very pleased with how little maintenance it needs. I'm a tournament fisherman, and fish almost every weekend. I fish year 'round here in Missouri, provided the ramps aren't frozen. It always starts.

Depending on what they are asking, I'd say you're looking at a good deal. Up here, an '04 is selling for about $16K.

if you look around good deals can be had on the ZX and TZX boats. you get a little wider boat, more storage, jackplate, hydro steering
