    Blowing Fuses

Just got back from a 10 day trip. Lost 2 1/2 days to a problem that we couldn't find until we got it to a shop on Monday AM. Long story short, it ended up being a 20 amp fuse on a little black ground wire. It has an inline fuse holder. It was located next to the main fuse/relay panel - power dustribution module I think he called it. In any case, it was not in it, so we missed it.

Motor is a 2000 FICHT 150. 15-20 hours on overhaul if it matters. Computer was reset at overhaul to reset double oiling. I can get exact model and serial # tomorrow if needed.

In any case, when it blew it wouldn't do anything, but the trim did work. They guy that found it said it was rare for these to blow--he had only seen a couple. There was a loose red wire that he said ran the computer that was tightened up by the first shop that looked at it. Said that was probably it and that we shouldn't have any other troubles.

Fished for a day and a half, starting the motor 20 times or so, then it blew again, twice, in subsequent start attempts. In all cases, it blew and nothing would happen when you turned the key. Got it started on the second fuse installed and fished for another day and a half and it blew again, but this time it would crank over, just not firing. Replaced it again and finished the trip. It would go 20-30 starts easy between blowing. Finished up with one spare in the five pack that I bought.

So, first of all, when a motor blows a fuse, will it likely throw a code to be read? I'm concerned that if it doesn't, it will be a dreaded "can't replicate problem in shop". Like I said, it would start 20-30 times in between. Most of the time it blew when it was already warmed up, except for the very first time which happened on the first starting for the day. Weather was cool--generally 40's and 50's and water in the upper 50's.

Secondly, if anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears. Probably done with the boat for the season, so I'll wait for the winterizing backlog to die down then take it in off season. I'll need to find a good Evinrude shop in the area. Any suggestions in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, NW Missouri?

Since it only happens during the start attempt and no other time do you suppose there may be a problem in the starter circuit or perhaps the switch itself? Just a thought.................G
