Does how a person operate a outboard shorten the life of the motor ? An aquantance of mine has a 1994 Evinrude 200. Every time he takes off he punches it close w/o to get to plane out then pulls throttle back. Also when we are running 1/4 throttle he will push close to wide open then pull back to 1/4 repedially. Does this shorten the life of a motor ? thanks

It probably shortens the life of his gearcase to be constantly in and out of the throttle like that.
On a 2 stroke, one thing that doesn't help them is being lugged down, so being to easy on it is just as bad as to hard, in my opinion. These engines are designed to operate in a power band so to speak, and when you exceed that, well that is when you can experience a loss in life much more rapidly.
When I leave a tourney, I am on mine hard, and I run wide open to where ever I am going. I have to get in and out of the throttle depending on the conditions on the lake, but I don't run everywhere wide open.
I am not overly worried about punching the throttle to leave as I am with the constant in and out. I would be he will be replacing a gear case fairly regularily if he keeps doing that.
