    Extended Warranty?

I did not get the extended warranty when I purchased my new E-Tec. I understand that I can purchase one thru an Evinrude dealer? Are they really worth it?

    Re: Extended Warranty? (kamie)

Understand that a 3rd party "extended warranty" is more like an insurance policy rather than an extension of a factory warranty.

I personally don't like them, but that's just me. Not all dealers sell the policies, but if you find one who does, ask to see a sample policy contract and read the fine print for exclusions (i.e. what's NOT covered). It all boils down to being a smart shopper.

Bomb. doesn't have an extended warranty!!!!! They promote FPC and when you as an individual inquire on the net with them and submit for a quote you may get 3 or 4 proposals from as many co's. If I had it to do all over again I would ask my dealer to submit for me and tell me which company he is willing to work with. They don't necessarily pay any bodys labor rate and you may be stuck with the difference. But if they are willing to accept what the warr. co. pays per hour then you have a better chance of being greeted better at the door.

You should be reading my "Extended Warranty" thread!!!!!! I believe, the FPC extended warranty pays the dealer exactly, if not more, than what BRP would pay a dealer for the same warranty work. What BRP pays the dealer in rate/hr depends on how much training/certifications the dealer may have when the FPC will pay posted shop rate. FPC will pay the dealer the same amount of time for the job in hours that BRP allows under their original warranty. Taking all of this into consideration would mean that the FPC extended warranty allows the same to the dealer as BRP in hours allowed for a warranty job but actually pays more in labor. BRP will not allow a dealer to overcharge you in labor hours because they know how long it should take a qualified tech to troubleshoot/repair a problem. The hard part is fing a dealer/shop that is honest and willing to accept the extended warranty and not try to rip you off. Of course SOME of the dealers/shops on these boards will stear you away from the extended warranty because they get you for double or triple the amount in charges as a non'warranty job compared to a warranty job, and the naiive consumers who have been unknowingly ripped off will agree with them beacuse they don't know any better. It is not an "Insurance" tyope policy as some people say. In fact my FPC extended warranty states in BOLD letters on the first line "THIS IS NOT AN INSURANCE POLICY". It is also not a health insurance policy where if your out of network you pay 30%. If a job is a warranty job (Meaning the part that broke is listed in the covered parts of the contract that yoyu pay for) and you have the extended warranty it should be covered 100% by the dealer/tech with no hassles/charges/complaints. SOME of these dealers/techs will try anything to go around any warranty work and charge you for anything. The ethanol excuse is working wonders for some dealers/techs right now because any damage they say is caused by the new ethanol fuel is not covered by any warranty. One dealer tried to charge me $1,000 for the bad fuel that he said was going around at the time, just before ethanol even arrived here, when he couldn't even say what the problem with the motors were never mind fix them. It turned out to be a computer (Injector timing) issue and not any "bad fuel", I did not pay that bill as BRP stood by the warranty and handled that dealer. You must find a dealer/tech in your area that welcomes your business for non'warranty work just as much as warranty work. In my area in is Art Merrills in Absecon NJ. The more you know about your engines the less opportunities they have to screw you. There area dealers/techs on here like Barnicle Bills/JohnRude in NJ that know the importance of word of mouth and are willing to put their reputation on the line by posting here with their business name because they know they are honest and have nothing to worry about. Now I'm ready for the lashing that is sure to come by some of the dealers/techs here. LOl Dave
