No reverse

1989 Johnson GT 150 V6. Motor won't engage in reverse, but forward is OK. Any ideas before I take it in to the shop, would like to do it myself if possible.

Disconnect the shift cable from the engine and move the linkage by hand while rotating the prop to see if the engine shifts into forward, nuetral reverse.

While the cable is off the engine shift the control to see if it moves the shift cable in both directions.

That'l tell you if it's the engine or control/cable.

Check lower unit lube at drain screw near bottom of gearcase for water or metal chunks.

If reverse is trying to engage, only with a ratcheting sound, the shifting dogs on the gear as well as the dogs on the clutch are probably rounded off, this requires re-machining or parts replacement. If all else is good and it just won't shift into gear, chances are you have a misalignment problem that has caused the brass bushing in the forward gear to move forward, preventing the shift shaft (inside the case) from moving rearward enough to engage reverse. This is a very common problem and will require complete disassembly to correct, either relocating the bushing or replace the gearset.

Thank you Shannon, I'm glad to hear your case is working well! I only wish I had more of the H.O. housings to work with. How did the Royal Purple work out for you?

It sounds as if you need some adjustment at the little black trunnion nut where the cable comes through under the hood. You are engaged a little heavy into reverse, go @ 3 turns toward the forward engagement side and see if that clears it up. Checking your oil is always a good idea, remember, fishing string is abundant below the surface!! ( UNFORTUNATELY )
