    Setup question.

I asked this on the Setup board, but I thought you guys would know.

This is on my Skeeter ZX202c, Yamaha 200 Vmax, 25M prop.
Not sure how to measure the prop to pad deal. If some could explain it.

I am only getting 64mph. When I trim up, it runs good for a few seconds then it feels like the nose drops just a little, the speed and rpms comes down. I can then trim it down some, feel it gain the speed and rpms back.

Any thoughts on getting more speed? From what I have read, this boat should push 70 fairly easy.

Park the boat on a level surface, unhooked from the truck.

Put a level on the fender or one of the rails and level the trailer.

Lower the motor, and with a level on the cavitation plate, level the motor.

Measure height from ground to lowest part of the boat, centerline at the very rear of boat. This is the pad, and is what is referred to when they mention a certain number of inches below pad.

Measure height from the ground to the center of the "bullet" on the front of the Yammie lower unit. (this is the same as the center of the prop shaft)

Subtract the big number from the small number and that's your figure. It's either going to be above pad, or below pad depending on which one was bigger. Typically on a Skeeter, it'll be below pad.

With the heatwave across the country right now, this isn't exactly a prime time for testing max speed. You'll do better in the fall or winter in cooler temps. You can adjust for your best summer setup, but keep in mind it'll be different than the best setup for cooler temps. You may even end up with a different summer prop if you really want optimum setup in the heat.

Ok I just did that measurement. It is 3" below the pad.

Now you know one more important detail when it comes to setting up your boat. The other thing you'll need and that you didn't mention is the rpms at max speed. With this info you can accurately correspond with set up guys or people with the same rig and compare numbers.

    Rpms were 5200 @ 64mph.
WHats concerns me most is the fluctuation. Its like I am goin up and down on the throttle. Went from 5200 to 47-4800 all by itself.

Charger, you may have a fuel delivery problem....bad fuel pump diaphram, bad fuel bulb, clogged filter, etc. I assume that is a carbed 200 you are running?

I'm not sure if you motor has it or not. Some do and some don't depending on year and model. I'm thinking the 200hp OX66 had them. I'll go out to the garage and take a photo and post it here. I'm on dial-up so standby.

Charger, it's up to you if you want to do all the bench testing but it probably wouldn't hurt to take it out and clean it. You're gonna need to get the gasket for it so you can replace it when you reinstall. You can use Ring Free of Sea Foam to clean it up. Sea Foam is much cheaper and will work just as well. The surging you are describing is very common with dirty sensors so maybe this will cure your problems.

I have and 225HPDI that started surging 2 to 300 rpms at WOW. It turned out to be my Throttle Position Indicator (TPI). The voltage was adjusted on it and ran fine.
