    Used 2006 Skeeter ZX 225

I am looking at buying a used 2006 ZX 225 Team boat. I am going to have a dealer do a compression test, but will I need to have a leak down test done as well being that the boat is only 6 months old. Also what are some other things I should have checked before purchasing this fine rig. The owners says that the motor has less than ten hours on it and has only been used 7 times.

if it has less than ten hours on it you need to be sure to finish the break in correctly as stated in the manual.

check all electronics, trolling motor, lights, lid latches, look for tares in the seat. fill the livewells with water and test the pumps. thats a good place to start

The new motors keep a log in their computer of hours used, rpms, ect. Have the dealer print out the complete operation history for you.

Yep, get the printout on the motor and request any service history records. The printout will show how many hours it has total and how may hours it has between each operating range in 1000rpm steps. It will also tell you if it has ever been to the rev limiter.

Also if it doesn't already have one request that they install a Racor filter or the new Yammie filter made by Racor. I am ordering one today myself. I think our gas issues have just begun with the introduction of ethanol in our fuels. The Racor will filter much better than the motor mounted filter and will also intercept any water that is in the gas.

Other than that just take it to the water and check everthing out real good. Don't leave any stone unturned.

Thanks for all of the responses, I will defintly get that print out along with all service records. When you say rev limiter are you refeering to the boat being run WOT and maxing out the RPM's.

I will also check into the Racor filter. Do you know what they cost off hand?

One other thing the boat has a small chip in the gel coat, about the size of a thumbnail; what would be the best way to repair this damage.

The rev limiter comes in at about 6150rpm. It is basically there to keep you from blowing the motor up. I would not be afraid of an engine that has hit it once or twice but I would not want to see one that someone limited out everytime they hit the water. That should not be the case if it is propped right anyway.

The Racor filter can be bought at http://www.boatfix.com for $62.72+shipping. I ordered mine today. The one you want is the 60gph model with the clear bowl on the bottom so you can see if there is any water in it. It has a little relief valve on the bottom to drain the water out. Racor makes another one just for Yammie that has a water sensor built into the bottom of the bowl. Just make sure they don't try to give you the one that looks like a oil filter and has no bowl at the bottom. It's not a Racor and there is no way to know if it has water in it without taking it off and pouring the contents into a glass jar. You can see some photos of them over on the Yammie forum. The topic comes up over there quite often and Yammie is recommending them on all the HPDIs now.

As far as the chip goes you can get a small repair kit at most marine shops. If it is in a white area you can use white Marine Tex to repair it also. I had a scrape on the side of mine. It got into the black metal flake. I used a black permanent marker to darken the flake back out and then used the clear gelcoat patch kit to cover it. You wouldn't even be able to find it now unless I pointed it out to ya and it's real hard for even me to find. Good luck on the new boat and post some pics when you get it.

Thanks for the info on the filter, but I have some bad news. My wife was going to look at the boat today and when she called to get direction the seller stated that he just sold the boat. Better luck next time I guess. I will keep looking, the dealer is in the process of finding me another good used ZX 225. Will keep you post on the process.
